TUTORIAL 4 THICK CYLINDERS SKMM2123

1. Figure Q1 shows a thick cylinder with internal diameter of 0.2 m and external diameter of
0.4 m. The cylinder is subjected to both internal pressure, Pi and external pressure, Po. Given
that Po = 10 MPa, find the value of internal pressure Pi that will cause a tensile hoop stress
of 150 MPa at point B, which is located in the middle of the cylinder wall. Subsequently,
sketch the hoop stress distribution across the wall thickness and indicate the hoop stress
values at the inner and outer surfaces of the cylinder.

2. A hydraulic cylinder (open-ended) with an internal diameter 250 mm is subjected to an

internal pressure of 10 MPa. Assume the yield stress of the cylinder material to be 60 MPa.
Determine the wall thickness based on:
a) Maximum principal stress theory
b) Maximum shear stress theory
c) Maximum distortion energy theory
Compare the results with wall thickness calculated based on thin cylinder assumption.

3. A thick-wall closed-end steel cylinder (elastic modulus, E = 200 GPa and Poisson’s ratio, ν =
0.3) with a diameter ratio of 2, has two strain gauges fixed externally, along the longitudinal
axis and in the hoop direction of the cylinder. The cylinder is subjected to an internal
pressure and this causes the hoop strain of 25010-6 and longitudinal strain of 6010-6.
a) What are the corresponding external hoop and longitudinal stresses obtained from strain
gauges readings?
b) What is the value of the imposed internal pressure?
c) If the cylinder is designed according to the Tresca criterion, determine the yield strength
of the material.
d) If the cylinder is open-ended, will the calculation for the yield strength result in a
HIGHER or LOWER value than the value calculated in c)? Do not perform any
calculation.
