STEEL ROLLING SHUTTERS
● A steel roller door or Rolling shutter is a type of door shutter consisting
of many horizontal steel strips or slats interlocked and hinged together
for maximum strength.
● It also gives very good protection against wind and rain.
● Mild steel rolling shutters are fabricated from high quality steed rods.
This shutter can be integrated with grills or perforated panels to achieve
ventilation or see through vision.
ADVANTAGE
● Weather resistant
The extreme climate conditions are not friendly with the ordinary door and
window installation and leave it's harsh effect on it . Rolling shutters are weather
resistant, it provides good protection from storms ,wind ,hail and rain.

● Enhanced security
The modern steel rolling shutters are more secure than traditional doors and
windows as it is completely made up of steel . Automatic rolling shutters can also co
come with inbuilt alarm system and biometric query features as well.

● Good noise reduction

Steel rolling shutters are very effective at blocking unnecessary sounds/ noises.
Types of steel rolling shutters ( based on operation of shutter)

1. Manual rolling shutters ( mechanical gear type shutters)

These rolling shutters are operated manually by applying manual pull or push. It is the
most basic type of rolling shutters pattern , but with modern rolling shutter technology ,
the manual operation of these large shutter can now be operated by a mechanical gear ,
connecting rod and winding handle or crank handle or chain of pulley blocks. This type
of roller shutter is known as mechanical gear rolling shutter. These are durable and are
ideal for small to medium size openings.
2.Electric rolling shutters ( automatic rolling shutters )

These types of shutters come with tubular electric motor fitted in it's rollers.
Operationally ,these shutters are relatively easy ,hassle free and extremely safe.
These motors can be operated through electrical switches, push - buttons or
remote keys. It can be manually released in case of power failure . These shutters
are very economical and so they are widely used in commercial establishments.
These are very suitable for garage doors , commercial buildings and industrial
projects. It is extremely durable and easy to maintain.
Built-in/ Built-on rolling shutters

In the built -in type of roller shutters, the

roller shutter box is made to be fixed into
the beam above the door , whereas ,in the
built - on type of roller shutter installation,
the shutter box is placed over the exterior
portion of the building portico.

Collapsible gates are horizontally folding, fully retractable door system. They are
good strong security barriers that offer very good visibility when locked .

Collapsible gates are galvanized for corrosion resistance and then powder
coated. These gates are manufactured from galvanized high grade steel and
supplied in an 'X’ lattice pattern as standard , with an 'S’ pattern as an option.
● The collapsible gates or door is fabricated from thin mild steel sections. The
collapsible door is fabricated from vertical pieces of rolled steel channels or
bars , 16 to 20 mm wide , joined together within the hollows of the steel bars
on the inside ; leaving a vertical gap between them of 12 to 20 mm.
● The roller is provided with both at their top and bottom side. The vertical
channel or bar is spaced at 10 to 13 cm center to center, and is joined to one
another by means of hoop iron cross pieces or flats 16 mm to 20 mm wide
and 5 mm thick which allow the door to open or fold.
● This gate is recommended for a maximum height of 3 m and there is no
restrictions in width

(doors fixed outside the opening and

top track fixed on wall surface )

2) Recessed collapsible gates

( doors fixed inside the opening and top

channel or track fixed under the lintel )
Suitability of steel collapsible gate
Advantage

● Cost effective
● Easy to handle
● Custom made to size
● High level of visibility
● Provide good ventilation and let in maximum light.
● Light in weight when compared to solid metal doors.
● It also provide good security against intrudes. These gates have very high
resistance to being bent or pulled out, making them very effective security
barriers; ideal for protecting both domestic and commercial premises.
Disadvantage

● It requires lubrication periodically. So it is not completely maintenance free.

● Dust is collected in the guide channel and therefore it becomes difficult to
operate over a period of time.
● It requires painting at a periodic intervals as they get corroded when exposed
to direct sunlight or rain.
● If not operated properly ,the hardware and rollers can get damaged , making
the door difficult to use.
Sashes
A floating. Sash lock to both sides and the gates can bunch to either side of the
opening. This design facilitates easy cleaning and improves flexibility to access. When
retraction is not a requirement, the gate has a fixed sash or grille. This is often used as
an alternative to fixed bars.
SASHES
Three measurements have to be taken for the grill width ( at the top ,middle ,
bottom of the grill) and three measurements have to be taken for the grill height (
left hand side ,middle , right hand side ). Order given using the shortest width and
height.
LATTICES AND POSTS
The number of lattices used to make up the gate with depend on the total
height.The number of post used to make up the gate will depend on the steel gate
width.
Collapsible gates can have fixed bottom track or folding bottom track and lift out
tracks when clear access is required , and also reduce the trip hazard of a standard
bottom track.
