Epic Secure Chat Tip Sheet

1. Open the patient’s chart. Hover

2. All care team members signed in

to the patient will pop up. You may
need to check accurate 1 date of
sign-in 2

3. Click on “New chat” to 3 start a
secure chat to the RN 3 signed in
for the shift.

4. The patient and MRN will be attached to the chat

5. Conversation Details is where you can add participants (ex: you’re going to lunch and
another tech needs to be included) or leave the conversation if it’s no longer relevant. People
you add will see all previous messages in the conversation.

There are two notifications of a new response to the chat:

6. The conversation bubble in the upper left corner will turn orange

7. A notification box will appear in the lower right corner of corner of your workscreen, even if
you do not have the patient’s chart open1
