Culturally Not Responsive Lesson
Task Description Students will create one animal representing of themselves. After they create
their piece of the totem pole, they will be put all together.
Enduring Understanding Exploring the totem poles created by the Pacific Northwest Native
Americans. Totem poles were typically stylized images of animals
that often-represented people, events, or even whole communities
South Carolina Standards
Sketching:
- Students pick an animal they feel represents them and sketch with detail
in their artist journals before beginning their final copy.
Art Making:
- Once students were pleased with their sketch, they were given a piece of
14"x12" white posterboard and redrew their animal onto the board in
pencil.
- Once the drawing was completed, students used tempera paint to add
color to their animals.
- Once the painting was finished, teacher will put strips of posterboard
stapled to the back of their boards to make their pieces 3-dimensional.
Set Up/Clean Up Teacher will hand out all materials for sanitation purposes.
Summative:
Checklist:
- Did the student pick an animal to depict?
- Did the student practice and sketch their animal with details?
- Did the student paint and add extra details to their animal?
Accommodations UDL:
- Show examples.
- Give a demo.
- Assist as needed.
Use the Multi-Modal Presentation Method:
- Speech: Information presented in an open discussion format.
- Visual: Information will be presented with visuals.
- Tactile: Students will create their own artwork.
