The SSQAR utilizes industry standard type II PCMCIA Cards. So far, the capacity of such
storage media ranges up to 2 Giga Bytes.
The following table presents some of the most currently used models. For reference
purpose, an estimate of ARINC 573/717 data capacity is calculated for three different
data rates.
Page : 12
The SSQAR has been designed to minimize the cost of ownership for customers. The
lower life cycle cost is driven by three main factors :
The board is a single circuit card which achieves all the required flight
data parameter sampling and recording and controls all states and
modes of the system. This board also includes the PCMCIA Reader /
Writer management and electrical interface.

The ARINC 573/717 interface is self-configuring : Upon aircraft power-on, the interface
shall automatically adapt the ARINC 573/717 data stream input rate. The configuration
is then stored to an internal non volatile memory of the equipment. This configuration
shall be selected upon the next power-up and compared to the actual data rate before
the equipment starts recording.

The SSQAR ARINC 429 inputs are provided in 32-bit ARINC 429 words received
individually at an expected rate equivalent to the operator programmed data rate. The
sampling of each one of the labels received is defined by the user and up loaded to a non
volatile memory of the equipment.
The equipment may acquire the ARINC 429 labels according to one of the following
methods:
a) Label Recognition.
When the equipment has been up-loaded with the relevant data, it may acquire up to
64 user defined ARINC 429 labels, each one being sampled at a specific rate.
Each ARINC 429 input line of the SSQAR shall record the ARINC 429 labels as they
are received.
Each available ARINC 429 input line of the unit may be assigned one method or the other.

Characteristics :
The SSQAR acquisition program for the ARINC 429 labels and Discrete inputs is fully
customisable to the operator requirements:
. Each discrete input line may be used for the RUN CONTROL command
. The sampling of each input line may be defined by the operator.
These settings are defined by the operator running a Windows compatible Ground
Software and uploaded to the SSQAR thanks to a dedicated PCMCIA card. The settings
are read and checked by the unit and stored to a non volatile internal memory.
Page : 22
The SSQAR provide the relevant provisions to interface to the Ethernet network using a
standard TCP-IP 10/100 protocol.
Page : 23
The SSQAR utilizes industry standard type II PCMCIA Cards. So far, the capacity of such
storage media ranges up to 2 Giga Bytes.
II-5.3.1. OVERVIEW
The SSQAR has been built using a minimal interface to aircraft systems and using only
power and data inputs. As such, most failures of internal circuitry will result only in non-
functioning of the SSQAR itself. Such non-functioning will result in the non-availability of
data when the PC Card is downloaded.
The SSQAR incorporates software and hardware to support the Built In Test Equipment
(BITE), the purpose of which is to detect equipment failures or degradations that will not
allow the unit to operate normally.
The BITE techniques, used in the SSQAR to achieve the specified performance, are as
follows :
On “Power up”, the date and time values are checked for accuracy. Failure of either of
these checks will cause the clock to reset to a fixed default value.
Page : 24
The front of the unit has 4 LEDs showing the following SSQAR status :
a) FAILURE
b) LOW CAPACITY
c) READY / RECORD
d) CONFIGURATION
When the unit is working properly, the LEDs illuminate in the following sequence:
ra ord
n
Co y / ity
tio
igu c

During operation, when a failure has been detected by the unit, one of the following
status displays:

After the configuration of the SSQAR has been defined on to the ground station, it is
uploaded using a dedicated PCMCIA Card. During this operation, the following LED
status applies:

Page : 26
The SSQAR contains the necessary circuitry to achieve a complete monitoring of the
incoming aircraft power supply and perform the relevant actions in order to ensure a
safe data recording process.
When a power failure occurs, the SSQAR enters a Power Down function. The recording
continues while in the Power Down function. If the power failure condition exists for more
than 1 second, “housekeeping” tasks are performed to save all pointers, flush any data
contained in buffers to the PCMCIA card and update all relevant indexes. If the power is
recovered after 1 second but before a hardware reset is issued, the record function is
re-activated. If power does not recover, recording ceases until power is applied again and
initialisation is completed.
A description of the interaction between these different states is shown in fig 12.
The download and readout of the recorded data is performed by a ground support
equipment composed of a standard laptop or desktop PC running the Professional
Ground Station (PGS) software P/N : 100-0100 or 100-0200.
This PGS software has been designed to readout and plot precisely the recorded
parameters and to provide automatic Flight Data Analysis in accordance with
FOQA/HOMP requirements. The PGS software is Windows 98/NT4/2000 and XP
compatible.

IV INTERCHANGEABILITY
All equipment is directly interchangeable - both mechanically and electrically - with other
equipments bearing the same part number and having the same modification status.
All sub-assemblies within the equipment are also interchangeable with others bearing
the same part number and having the same modification status.
Page : 35
Other than the BITE system, in-depth diagnostics of the equipment can be performed
by connecting a PC/terminal to the RS232 interface. These tests are more time
consuming than those performed during “Power-up” self test and can be performed in
situ.
“On condition” maintenance applies to the SSQAR, as far as it is practicable, using the
BITE to identify unit failure.
Exception to this is for the RTC backup battery. It is recommended that the RTC backup
battery is replaced every 10 years.
The average repair time, including testing of the repaired equipment, is 6 hours.
The internal Time and Date values are updated using the RS232 interface and the
Microsoft Windows Hyper Terminal software. Actual values are passed to the unit to
update the internal Date and Time.
Page : 36
Unless otherwise agreed, the SSQAR ships without any predefined acquisition program.
However, the unit comes with a Configuration Software that affords the operator to
easily set-up its own acquisition program and upload it to the unit:
. ARINC 573/717
. Discrete Input
Each available Discrete Input may be recorded or not. Any one of the available Discrete
Inputs may be used to operate a Run Control command. The starting of recording may
be defined when the Discrete Input turns to ON or OFF
. ARINC 429
Each available ARINC 429 input line may be set up to High Speed (HS) or Low Speed
(LS) mode. These input lines may as well use the “Label Don’t Care (LDC)” mode
(Records any incoming label) or Label Recognition Mode (LR). Using this mode, the
operator may define up to 16 labels to be acquired per ARINC 429 input line as
presented in fig 17 above.
