LESSON 1&2: SACRED and SECULAR MUSIC OF LUZON

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

a. identify the musical characteristics of Lowland Luzon


folksongs and;
b. differentiate liturgy and devotional music from secular music.

Philippine music describes the traditional and cultural impacts of the ancient
civilizations in Asia to our country. Filipino’s musical culture gathered great vocal and
instrument from colonizers like the Spaniards and the Americans. Many form of music
were introduced, both sacred and secular forms, with different characteristics and
functions.
Have you heard your grandmother singing to your younger siblings in putting
them to sleep? How about your grandfather? Does he sing while he works?
Some of these songs that you have heard are called Folksongs. In this lesson, you will
be learning the Folksongs of the lowland Luzon.

• Pabasang Pasyon is a verse narrative on the life and sufferings of Jesus Christ.
• Senakulo came from the Spanish cenaculo- a Lenten play that describes the
events from the Old and New testaments. Related to the life, suffering, and
death of Christ.
• Salubong on eastern Sunday is held early morning in the plaza before dawn
mass.
• Flores de Mayo is celebrated in honor of the Virgin Mary. The people offer
flowers to Virgin Mary once they arrive at the church after the procession.
• Santacruzan is a devotion honoring St. Helena (known as Reyna Elena) and
Emperor Constantine finding the True Cross in Jerusalem.
• Tiples are young chorus boy sopranos who trained and sustained by important
parishes such as Las Piñas and Sto. Domingo churches.

INSTUMENTAL MUSIC
The Bamboo Organ of Las
Piñas

The bamboo organ is an


important land mark of Philippines
history and culture. It is the pride of
the town of Las Piñas. The bamboo
organ is the oldest and most unique
musical instrument in the Philippines.
Its durability is unsurpassed, having
lasted for more than 160 years while
most organs last only for 15 years.

Secular Music is non-religious music. The word ‘secular’ means being separated
from religion.
VOCAL FORM

Folk song is one of the vocal traditional music of the Filipino people. It expresses
the people’s everyday activities, customs, and beliefs which are put together as music. It
said to be the “voice of the people”.
It is orally passes on from generation to generation. The folk songs from one
place were transmitted to other places as well.

Kumintang is a war song that became famous for the Batangeños. It was the
kundiman that gave inspiration among Filipinos who were involved in the continuing fight
for freedom. It is a dance-song performed by pairs of men and women, with text
concerning love and courtship.

Kundiman is a traditional Filipino song that expresses the lofty sentiment of
love and even heroism, in passionate but melancholic mood.
