The document provides details about the master plan and design concepts for the VIKASA World School main building and campus. It summarizes that the design had to account for constraints of a small 7-acre land area to accommodate required educational and sports facilities. Compact building designs with small footprints were used to maximize open space. Explanations are provided on design elements like the portico and use of light and framing of views. The master plan and architecture aimed to effectively plan the school facilities while addressing the various constraints of the project.

ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Concept & explanations call for a separate presentation on its own which I might do later after TCE reopens and if time permitted at TCE arch dept. As, so much more details have to be shown & explained to you. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Hence a brief explanation is given now to explain certain aspects only which you should understand during this visit.

ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Educational Institutions fall into 2 categories: 1) Philanthropic, which are built by huge corporates and the institutions subsidised from the earnings of the corporate companies and usually they are built on very huge land area and costs are not great constraints. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. 2) Non Philanthropic: These are started by educationists to promote education in a very good manner and also have a decent, fair earnings from them and so the affordability & constraints are higher and are on smaller land area because of cost constraints. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Vikaasa World School, a Cambridge Education School, (which is just one step below true International Board), is under the 2nd category. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Now let us see the Master Plan.
You’ll better understand this by
seeing the A3 size print out given to you. Also from other drawings given to you as hard copies. The intention of this brief is to be able to read the presentation on Presentation smartby P.R.S. phones. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Vikaasa World School Master Plan – yellow color shows buildings. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. The buildings are compactly designed with small foot prints as required by the clients to gain maximum area for sports facilities since the land area is relatively quite small – just 7 acres. And with foot ball ground as requirement, the land is small. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. For this type of Cambridge School, about 20 students only would be in one class room of about 45 Sq.M. (450 to 500 S.Ft.)

ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. And all the buildings are to be fully air conditioned in the near future. To be economical too, compactness becomes necessary, & for providing courtyards, space was a constraint & also the heat gain from the courtyard would boost the cost of air conditioning. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. VAASTHU TOO PLAYED SOME ROLE ! (which is not explained here)

ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. So, the whole master plan, along with the buildings and the sports facilities were done with these constraints, and IMHO, with all the constraints, an effective planning & a decent architecture has been brought out in this school design. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. At present, the main building has been completed with its surrounding landscape and the Indoor Sports cum Auditorium building & Swimming Pool are in progress. Major out door sports such as the Foot Ball Field, skating rink etc., and 2nd block of class rooms are yet to be done as 3rd phase construction. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Salient points to be noted are: As you enter from the main gate, and walk towards the building, sequential revelation of architectural details get seen. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. This is as per the philosophies of one of the noted Japanese architects Yoshinobu Asihara, who was one among the designers of the famous World Trade Center in U.S. which was bombed. NOW INSIDE THE BUILDING – Foyer – this is not a type of school where there would be crowd during admission time. Interviews are timed in a way that at a time 2 or 3 parents cum student are in the foyer. So, there was no need for a reception counter. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. Floor design on corridor floor Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. LKG / UKG colorful corridor – light is not as bright as it looks – explained later. One of the UKG / 1st std class rooms. Labs – under the floor plumbing lines to sinks – Floor slab is sunk by 25 CM. Labs – power cables come up from the floor slab to electric power points. View looking down from terrace. Excepting the UKG/LKG classrooms and the Admin area & Foyer, final interior furnishing will be redone after completion of the Indoor Sports cum Auditorium building & Swimming Pool. Hence what you see now are furniture they already had with them. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Similarly, the wall pictures you see in the Foyer will be replaced by large relief wall murals done by professional muralists in the near future – probably when the air conditioning facility gets done. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Now the small drawbacks: The KG & 1st Std block corridor has only just sufficient light for walking.
The original concept plan had a
large cut out on both sides of corridor as open spaces to allow light. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Because the govt map of the boundaries were different than the actual site boundaries, the boundary behind this block was wrong and as per the govt topo sketch, it did not allow minimum side open space of 6M. LPA insisted on the govt boundary only. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. Hence, the open space cut outs had to be eliminated and the classroom blocks joined. Open space in- between toilet block & classroom block also got reduced. In reality, there is a huge space behind this block. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. But to still get light inside the corridor, toughened frosted double glazing walls were suggested by me on both sides of corridor and for the doors too, to allow light from the classroom windows (large windows) to spill over on the corridor. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V. ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI. This too did not happen as there were apprehensions of the glass getting damaged / broken by the kids.
Hence, ceiling lights have to be ON during
daytime too, even though ventilation is not affected at the moment because of openings above lintel.
And the entire school is provisioned for
Solar Electricity. You will see the original plan with cut outs in the following picture. Original plan with cutouts & larger gap between toilet block & classroom block. Before thanking you, let me say that there are lot of relevant design details which I would like to mention to you in a separate presentation if time permitted.
