1 INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the module in Operational Risk Management (RSK4801). You will have to devote at least
240 hours to reading, making summaries and practising calculations.

1.1 Getting started

Please note that this module is offered fully online. You, therefore, need to go online to find the study
material and to complete the learning activities for this course. Go to the website here:
https://my.unisa.ac.za. Then log in with your student number and password. You will see the RSK4801-
20-Y1 module site in the row of modules at the top of the webpage. READ the Welcome page.

2 OVERVIEW
2.1 Fully online module

All study material for this module is available on myUnisa. It is therefore essential that you register on
myUnisa and access the module site regularly. You must be registered on myUnisa to be able to access
the learning material and the assignment questions, to submit your assignments, to gain access to
various learning resources, to “chat” with a lecturer or teaching assistant and fellow students about your
studies and challenges that you might encounter, and to participate in online discussion forums.
Importantly, myUnisa contains the Lessons option, from which you must access the study material for
this module once you have registered on and have access to myUnisa. Additional resources and self-
assessment questions are also only available online.

2.2 Material to support the online module

Because we want you to be successful in this online module, the module topics are available for
download under Lessons. Also, look at the self-assessment questions and other additional material
available under Additional Resources.

All study material must be downloaded from myUnisa. Please note that there is no study guide. All
material is available in the lessons.

4.1 myUnisa

The myUnisa learning management system is the University's online campus, which will help you
communicate with your lecturers, with other students and with the administrative departments at Unisa.

To go to the myUnisa website directly, go to https://my.unisa.ac.za. Click on Claim UNISA Login, on the
top of the screen on the myUnisa website. You will then be prompted to give your student number in
order to claim your initial myUnisa details as well as your myLife e-mail login details.

4.3 Predatory providers of classes and examination support

Be aware that there are multiple fraudulent and predatory providers that offer classes and examination
guidance to Unisa students. Please note that Unisa does not have agreements with any of these
agencies/schools/colleges to provide tuition or support to our students. Unisa also does not provide
these predators with study material, guidelines or your contact information.

These providers may not have the necessary expertise to assist you and often charge exorbitant fees. If
you receive an invitation from any agency or college, it is best to confirm with your lecturer whether the
provider is a legitimate Unisa partner.

5 HOW TO STUDY ONLINE

5.1 What does it mean to study fully online?

Studying fully online modules differs completely from studying some of your other modules at Unisa in
the following way:

 All your study material and learning activities for online modules are designed to be
delivered online on myUnisa.
 All of your assignments must be submitted online. This means that you will do all your
activities and submit all your assignments on myUnisa. In other words, you may NOT post
your assignments to Unisa using the South African Post Office.
 All communication between you and the University happens online. Lecturers will
communicate to you by e-mail and SMS, as well as using the Announcements, the
Discussion Forums and the Questions and Answers tools. You can also use all of these
ways to ask questions and contact your lecturers.

5.2 myUnisa tools

The main tool that we will use is the Lessons tool. This tool will provide the content of and the
assessments for your module. At times, you will be directed to join discussions with fellow students and
complete activities and assessments before you can continue with the module.

It is imperative that you log in to myUnisa regularly. We recommend that you log in at least once a week
to do the following:

 Check for new announcements. You can also set your myLife e-mail account so that you
receive the announcement e-mails on your cellphone.
 Use the Discussion Forum. When you do the activities for each learning unit, we want you
to share your answers with the other students in your group. You can read the instructions
and even prepare your answers offline, but you will need to go online to post your messages.
 Do other online activities. For some of the learning unit activities, you might need to post
something on the Blog tool, take a quiz or complete a survey under the Self-Assessment
tool. Do not skip these activities, because they will help you complete the assignments and
the activities for the module.

We hope that by giving you additional ways to study the material and practise all of the activities, this will
help you to succeed in the online module. To get the most out of the online module, you MUST go online
regularly to complete the activities and assignments on time.

6 ASSESSMENT
6.1 Assessment plan

Assignments are seen as part of the learning material for this module. As you do the assignments, study
the reading texts, consult other resources, discuss the work with fellow students or do research, you are
actively engaged in learning. Paying attention to the assessment criteria for each assignment will help
you to understand what is required of you more clearly.

There are four assignments for this module. All four assignments contribute to your year mark. Your year
mark, based on the mark obtained for the four assignments, contributes 30% towards your final mark,
while your examination mark contributes 70%.

In an open distance learning (ODL) environment, the importance of continuous assessment cannot be
overestimated. Analysis of student data has shown that the more assignments a student submits, the
better his/her chances are of passing the final examination. Therefore, all Unisa students enrolled for
honours and postgraduate diploma modules must obtain a minimum year mark of 40% to gain
admission to the examination.

You have to submit four assignments, which will be used to calculate your year mark. Assignments that
are not submitted will count zero towards your year mark. There are non-negotiable submission
deadlines for each of the assignments. Assignments that are received late will receive a mark of 0%.

Students’ year marks will not be adjusted to ensure examination admission. If your year mark is 39% or
less, you will not have examination admission.

The following table is an example illustration of how assignments count towards the year mark as well as
the final calculation of the year mark for examination admission.

The combined weighted average of your year mark and examination mark must be 50% or higher for you
to pass the module. However, you must obtain a minimum of 40% in the examination, regardless of your
year mark. If you obtain less than 40% in the examination, your year mark will not be taken into account,
and you will fail the module.

*Because this is an online module, the assignments are not provided at the beginning. The assignments
are available on myUnisa, under Additional Resources. You will be notified once the assignments are
uploaded. You will therefore need to download them once they are available..
