electrolysis takes place .
This fact leads to classification of the following zones:((Figure 1 – from guides CEI 64-
14):

• between the room ceiling and the penetration grid superior edge (zone with a
low degree of ventilation) classified as Z1 (however, eliminable);

• within the radius of 50 cm around the storage batteries penetration

(EN 50272-2) Z1 for batteries of open type, Z2 for batteries if of “closed type,
valves regulated”, i.e. hermetic.

Therefore, provision is made for cropped ceiling (Figure 2), whence to eliminate in any
case the zone with a low degree of ventilation.

• Penetrations with walls air induction, to assure natural ventilation under

normal operation conditions as well as during complete charging stage;

• Any eventual system of artificial ventilation and, in case VN of the above

mentioned shall not be in grade of guaranteeing air exchange sufficient to
maintain the percentage of gas (hydrogen) produced by storage batteries
during the complete charging stage, under 30% of the inflammability inferior
limit, as per the calculation given below.

Ventilation system should be provided in this case with two extractors, each sized for the
full capacity required and each one being stand-by for the other one.
Their availability (continuous functioning) shall be double, since two identical ventilation
systems should be installed, independent upon common failure causes, thus
guaranteeing uniform air dilution in the room, that shall be then artificially classified as
non-AD.

As indicated by Regulation DIN-VDE 0510 – part 2, ventilation flow sufficient to dissolve

air under 30% of the inflammability inferior limit results from the following relation :

Q=v·q·s·n·I·k
where :

Q = air volume m³/h

v = dilution factor, ratio of water-air volume on the minimum inflammability
level of hydrogen v= 96%/4% = 24
q = hydrogen volume developed for electrolysis by current in every cell
per 1 ampere and per 1 hour, at the temperature of 0°C and pressure
of 1013 bar q = 0,42 × 10-3 m3/Ah
s = Safety factor In the regulation s = 5 is advised
20223.BLD.ELE.SDS
Eni S.p.A. Rev. 2 January 2007
Exploration & Production Division Sheet 17 di 20

n = Number of cells
I = Current value in correspondence of which electrolytic dissociation
occurs, per V > 2,4 V/elem (2A for every 100 Ah)
k = Antimony content indicating factor (k = 1 for Sb>3%, k = 0,5 for
Sb<3%), effects directly the value of current

Similar value is obtained by the formula in regulation EN 50272-2 (actually:

v · q · s = 0,052)

Q = 0,05 x l x n x k

For batteries of hermetic type in Pb, the formation of hydrogen during complete
charging is 5-10 times less than that with batteries of open type, thus the value of
current is reduced by further factor of 0,5 and in consequence, even the capacity
value.
In this case ventilation is easily obtainable with only VN, penetrations with walls
air induction (cropped ceiling) and/or doors air induction being sized in order to
guarantee natural air flow as calculated.

Therefore, the use of artificial ventilation system is not required.

Penetrations shall have minimum dimensions determined in accordance with the
following calculation (DIN VDE 0510 - part 2):

A (cm2) ≥ 28 x Q (m3/h)

If provision should not be made for two of them, one shall be of entrance and the
other one of exit on the opposite walls, and if possible, one shall be in the upper
part and the other in the lower part.

The ventilation is considered of high degree, when it provides for dissolving,

below 30% of LEL, produced gas and hydrogen vapours, within a significant
distance from producing sources and ceasing the production at concentration
being under LEL in all the surroundings.
The availability (or reliability) of ventilation system can be classified as good as it
is always present (under normal operating conditions as well as during complete
charging stage).
As far as the typology of electrical plant concerns, its type shall correspond to
non-hazardous area, since installed in the non-AD, i.e. outside the zone
compressed in the radius of 0.5 m from penetrations (ducts) (EN 50272-2 e DIN-
VDE 0510).

The choice of hermetic batteries with gas recombination or gel electrolyte, almost
barren of hydrogen production, provides for natural ventilation only (one grid on
one side in the bottom and one grid on the other side in the upper part) and for
ordinary lighting system of normal type (only Watertight type).

However, for preventive purposes, ordinary lighting system and safety lighting
system can be anyway installed in Ex execution manner.

2.4.7. Thermal station room

Electric plant should be constructed in consideration of the burner thermic capacity and
the fluid used as fuel.
20223.BLD.ELE.SDS
Eni S.p.A. Rev. 2 January 2007
Exploration & Production Division Sheet 18 di 20

As explosion-hazardous sites, should be considered thermal stations of potential

exceeding 35 kW , with gas fuel and with combustible fuel heated at the temperature
exceeding the inflammation temperature e.g. combustible oil.
As high degree fire-hazard sites, should be considered diesel thermal stations when the
fire-fighting section class is equal or exceeding 30. (CEI 64-8/7)
Thermal stations of potential exceeding 116 kW (100.000 kcal/h) are subject to control as
per V.F. ( DM 16/2/1982) on the national territory.

specification shall be fabricated workmanlike to comply with the safety requirements of
the normative references.

2.6.2. Protection against direct contacts

The active parts of the electric circuits shall be located and protected in conformity with
the requirements of the normative references, so that trained and authorised personnel
can carry out the following operations, while the plants are energised, without any danger
of direct contacts:

• visual inspection of the manoeuvre equipment;

• adjustment and reset of relays and switches, and inspection of signalling devices and
instruments;
• replacement of auxiliary fuses, lamps, etc..;
• voltage and current measurements and fault detection, obtained by means of
dedicated properly insulated instruments;
• connection of entering cables;
• removal of the components from any de-energised circuit, for maintenance purposes.

The protection shall be obtained by earthing the accessible metallic items.

2.6.3. Protection against the indirect contacts

The protection shall be provided by a protection circuit connected to the earthing plant, in
conformity with the neutral system indicated in the Data Sheet and the CENELEC HD
384 Harmonisation Document.
As a consequence of the above, a protection bar (PE) shall be installed in all the panels.
20223.BLD.ELE.SDS
Eni S.p.A. Rev. 2 January 2007
Exploration & Production Division Sheet 19 di 20

connection of the protection cables and the cables armours from outside the panel. It
shall remain insulated from the active items and the masses.
The electric protections shall be co-ordinated so that the timely interruption of the fault
current shall be guaranteed should the contact voltage assume hazardous values, larger
than those indicated in the normative references.

The earthing protection shall be integrated by earthing differential devices.

These devices shall be installed on each single circuit both for the power and the lighting
distribution.

2.6.4. Protection against the indirect contacts of UPS

contacts of UPS must be verified under normal operating conditions and under “in island”
operation as well, IT system.
Standard configuration should provide for differential switch upstream of UPS and
magneto-thermic switches for protections downstream.
In case the static change-over switch interrupts neutral conductor or the latter is not
connected with a transformer pole, insulation control system should be installed on the
downstream line for signalling the first earth fault.

2.6.5. Fire detection and Fire-Fighting System

When required the fire-fighting system will be composed of:

2.6.5.1 Smoke Detection System

Through detectors installed in the rooms to be protected.
