Brief History of Medical Technology in the Philippines
• Medical Technology in the Philippines was introduced by the 26th Medical
Infantry of the 6th U.S. Army

• June 1943 when U.S. Army left

• Dr. Pio de Roda organized Manila Public Health Laboratory from the remnants
of the US Armys and eventually established Medical laboratory syllabus training
program for high school graduates but it didn't last.

• The First well established institution that offers B.S Degree course of Medical
Technology is the Philippine Union College (Adventist University of the
Philippines) and Manila Santinarium

• The Medical Technology Education was founded by Mrs. Willa Hilgert Hedrick
an American Medical practitioner and Missionary of Seventh Day Adventist
Church in the Philippines

Philippine Union College of Baesa
• First to offer BS Medical Technology

• Dr. Jesse Umali was its first graduate after 2 years-


Now called “Adventist University of the Philippines”,
the course offer was made possible through the
help of its sister institution Manila Sanitarium
Hospital, now “Manila Adventist Medical Center”
1957-1958
University of Santo Tomas
• Dr. Antonio Gabriel and Dr. Gustavo Reyes of UST
offered MT as an elective to pharmacy students. Due
to its popularity, it was decided to be offered it as a
course

1960
Centro Escolar University
• CEU offered MT course.
• First batch graduated in 1962
• Mrs. Purificacion Sunico-Suaco made a feasibility
study for the offering of the BSMT course, it was
duly approved by the university president, Carmen
de Luna
1962-1962
Far Eastern University
• Dr. Horacio Ylagan and Dr. Serafin Juliano
applied for the offering of BSMT course in
FEU which was approved in 1962.
• First batch graduated in 1963

University of the Philippines


• Offers the same course but the degree is
conferred to as B.S. Public Health
