HPS: _25__
I. Direction: Identify if there is a mistake in the solution, write the correct solution in the Correction Column and
make a brief reason. Write No Error, if there is no mistake in the solution.
2. 8 x 2−21+10
( 8 x−5 ) ( x−2 )=0
( 2 x−5 ) ( 4 x−2 ) =0
( 8 x−5 ) =0 ; x−2=0
( 2 x−5 )=0 ; 4 x−2=0
8 x=5 ; x=2
2 x=5 ; 4 x=2
5

5 1 8
x= ; x=
2 2
3. x 2−6 x−40=0
( x−10 ) ( x+ 4 )=0
x=10 ; x=4
II. Problem Solving. Analyze each of the following problem and show your complete solution.
1. The difference between the two positive numbers is 8 and the square of their sum is 256. Find the
two numbers.
2. The perimeter of a rectangular garden is 20 m and its area is 16 m 2. Calculate the length and the
breadth of the garden.
Solution:
Let the length of the rectangular garden be x m.
20−2 x
Then the breadth of the rectangular garden is (2 )
=(10−x ) m.
∴ x ( 10−x )=16
10 x−x 2=16
x 2−10 x+16=0
( x−2 ) ( x−8 ) =0
x−2=0 ; x−8=0
x=2 ; x=8
When x=2,
Breadth of garden¿ 10−2
¿8 m
When x=8
Breadth of garden ¿ 10−8
¿2 m
Since the length of the rectangle usually refers to the longer side,
Length of garden = 8 m
Breadth of garden = 2 m
3.. The height, y meters, of an object projected directly upwards from the ground can be modelled by
y=20t−5 t 2, where t is the time in seconds after it leaves the ground. (5 points)
i) Find the height of the object 2 seconds after it leaves the ground.
