SCIENCE | MEASUREMENT & GEOMETRY

Lesson 3, 4 & 5 |12th June 2019

Solids and Liquids | Scientific Method

Introduction:
1. Go over the lesson from last week, where students were given the chance to
illustrate everything they already knew about solids and liquids.
Open this up as a discussion and allow students to bounce ideas off one another.
2. Ask students ‘what words would you use to describe a solid?’ and write their
answers on the board.
Use examples from what students told you last week to prompt students.
3. Ask students ‘what words would you use to describe a liquid?’ and write their
answers on the board.
Use examples from what students told you last week to prompt students. E.g. You
told me last week that Timmy the turtle lives in a liquid – how would you describe his
habitat?
4. Introduce the experiment to students and tell them that we are going to be melting
chocolate. ‘How could we melt chocolate?’ Give students time to discuss.
5. Walk through the experiment with students.

Body:
6. Walk students through the lesson for today and express your expectations of how
the lesson will go.
- We will complete the experiment together.
- We will do step-by-step as a class.
- It is expected that when asked, students will put down all their writing utensils.
- Complete the task in their book, only writing the words that are underlined off
the slide and answering appropriately.
7. Ask students to answer the first page’s questions.
a. Observations
b. Prediction
Start 10 minute timer.

8. Instruct students to begin melting their chocolate.

Begin 5 minute timer.
9. After 5 minutes, gain the classes attention and ask them to list their observations of
what their chocolate now looks like.
10. Students can continue melting their chocolate.
Begin 5 minute timer.
11. After 5 minutes, gain the classes attention and ask them to list their observations of
what their chocolate now looks like.
12. Students chocolate should have completed melted by now and they are to
complete the following stages of the scientific method.

13. Gain classes attention and talk through the experiment. It is important to ensure
that all students are on the right track at this stage and to make sure they
understand the process.
14. We are now going to place the melted chocolate in the fridge. Ask students what
they think is going to happen once we put it in the fridge and to write their
prediction in their books.

15. Place student’s chocolate in the fridge and bring students back to the mat.

Conclusion:
16. As an ‘exit slip activity’ students are to work in pairs and to complete the activity
attached (appendix 1). Using the alphabet as a guide, students are to list as many
solids or liquids for each letter of the alphabet.
