End – session Activity

• Write an essay on the impact of globalization to the course of infectious

diseases.
• Create a timeline of outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics. For each disease,
provide the ecological (E), social (S), cultural (C) and biological (BIO) factors
involved in the spread of the disease and the consequences (CONS) of the
disease (example on the next slide)
• Please email your essay and the timeline at admin@hct.ph on or before (May
11, 1PM – Manila Standard Time)

PLAGUE OF ATHENS
The earliest recorded devastating urban
epidemic.
E: Crowded living conditions and lack of
food and water caused by war.
S: Brought to Athens by soldiers returning
from the Peloponnesian War.
C: Personal hygiene and clothing habits
may have been altered by conditions of
war.
Cons: Killed one quarter to one half of the
population of Athens and initiated a
global pandemic; loss of social mores and
fear of the law.
Bio: The cause of the epidemic remains a
scientific mystery.
