Let’s Analyze

Activity 1: Getting acquitted with the essential terminology and basic concepts in the study of
structural design 2 is not enough, one should be able to analyze and solve complex engineering
problems as well.

At this juncture, you will be required to elaborate your answers about the following questions:

Situation 1: List the three regions of a stress-strain diagram for a mild or low-carbon structural steel

a. Elastic strain region

It is the region where the material can be deformed and when released will return back to its
original configuration. Many metals in the elastic region have a resulting strain that is proportional
to the tensile load when the applied tensile load is small.

b. Plastic strain region

The region in which the material deforms permanently is called the plastic region. In the material
science the plastic region is a limit in which when a body subjected to load, after removing load the
body won't regains its original shape.

c. Strain hardening region

This region starts as the strain goes beyond the yielding point, reaching a maximum at the ultimate
strength point, which is the maximal stress. It is the strengthening of a metal or polymer by plastic
deformation. This strengthening occurs because of dislocation movements and dislocation
generation within the crystal structure of the material.
Situation 3: List four advantages of steel as a structural material.

a. High Strength
 This means that the weight of the structure that made of steel will be small.
b. Ductility
 Can withstand extensive deformation without failure under high tensile stresses.
 It gives warning before failure takes place
c. Elasticity
 Steel follows Hooke’s Law very accurately.
d. Uniformity
 Means that it tends to be planned according to the design requirements.
 Properties of steel do not change as oppose to concrete.
