AE 321 – Homework #8

Due: Monday April 15, 2019

Chapters 5, 6: Problem formulation, Extension

1. A linear elastic rod is subjected to a shear traction σrz(θ) on the lateral boundary that is
independent of coordinate z. Also σrθ = σrr = 0 on that boundary. The two ends are traction free.
(a) State the boundary conditions of this problem in cylindrical coordinates.
(b) Assume that the solution to such a problem is independent of z (i.e. ∂/∂z = 0) and that u = 0 v
=0 and w = w(x,y). Simplify the field equations in Cartesian coordinates. State your answer in
terms of the function w. Assume that there are no body forces. Do not solve for w in the resulting
equations. Note: Such a problem is called anti-plane shear.

2. A cylindrical bar of a linearly elastic homogeneous and isotropic material (𝐸𝐸,ν) is loaded in
extension with a non-uniform traction load 𝑃𝑃(𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦) = 𝛼𝛼𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑦𝑦 2 distributed over its end faces
as shown. If the bar is very long (i.e. L >> a)
(a) find the traction 𝑇𝑇 = 𝑇𝑇(𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦, 𝑧𝑧) on the hemispherical surface shown in the figure.
(b) find the displacement field in the bar if we assume the bar is fixed at (0,0,0) and
displacements are such that 𝑢𝑢 = 𝑢𝑢(𝑥𝑥), 𝑣𝑣 = 𝑣𝑣(𝑦𝑦) and 𝑤𝑤 = 𝑤𝑤(𝑧𝑧).
(c) sketch the deformed shape of the hemispherical surface as predicted by your solution.
3. A bar of length L made from a linearly elastic homogeneous and isotropic material (𝐸𝐸,ν) and
constant cross section rotates about one end with angular velocity ω.
(a) find the axial stress and strain as a function of x
(b) find the elongation of the bar.
