Developmental Activity
A. Priming Activity
Determine the number that must be added to make each of the following a perfect square
trinomial.
1. x 2−18 x +¿ ¿ 6. x 2+ 6 x +¿ ¿
2. x 2+ 12 x +¿ ¿ 7. x 2−4 x +¿ ¿
3. x 2−22 x +¿ ¿ 8. x 2−14 x +¿ ¿
4. x 2−20 x +¿ ¿ 9. x 2+ 10 x + ¿ ¿
5. x 2−16 x +¿ ¿ 10. 4 x2 −20 x + ¿ ¿

ANALYSIS
Based on our activities done, answer the following questions.
1. What can you say about the activity?
2. How did you come up with your answer?
3. Where do you think is the perfect square trinomial use?

ABSTRACTION
A Circle is a set of points in the xy plane that are a fixed distance r from a fixed point (h,k), where
(h,k) is the center of the circle and r is the radius.

The standard form of the equation of a circle with its center at the origin is x 2+ y 2=r 2.
Look at the equation x 2+ y 2=32. The center of the circle is at the origin (0, 0) and the radius is 9.

If the center of the circle is NOT at the origin then the equation for the standard form of a
circlelooks like this: ¿ where the center is at (h, k). The values of h and k indicate that the circle is
translated h units horizontally and k units vertically from the origin.

Example: Find the center and radius of the circle.

The center of the circle is at (h, k) which is (3,1) and the radius is 4.
¿
¿
¿
Therefore, the center is (-3, -1) and the radius is 16
But what if it was not in standard form but in a General Form x 2+ y 2+ Dx + Ey+ F=0 , where D, E, and
F are real numbers. The equation is obtained by expanding the standard equation of a circle ¿ by FOIL
method
Example: ¿
( x +2 )( x +2 ) +( y−4 )( y−4)=4
x 2  4 x  4  y 2  8 y  16  4
Moving everything to one side in descending order and combining like terms we'd have:
x 2+ y 2+ 4 x−8 y +16=0 Is now in the general form.

How do we determine the center and the radius of a circle?

Explain the process of getting the equations of a circle and also the center and the radius.

APPLICATION
1. Find an equation of the circle with center at (0, 0) and radius 7.
2. Find an equation of the circle with center at (0, 0) that passes through the point (-1, -4).

EVALUATION
1. Find an equation of the circle with center at (-2, 5) and radius 6
2. Find an equation of the circle with center at (8, 2) and passes through the point (8, 0).
3. Find the center and radius of the circle: x 2+ y 2+ 6 x −4 y =0

ASSIGNMENT
Identify the center and radius and sketch the graph:
 x  4 2   y  3 2  25
