2. between 36 and 38
3. 50 and 150

2. How did you come up with your answer?
3. What do you think is our lesson for today?

ABSTRACTION
The median is the value of the middle term when the data are arranged in either ascending or
descending order. Half of the terms are located above the median while the other half, below the
median.
The median is a positional measure. Therefore, the values of individual items in a distribution do
not affect it. It is affected by the number of items not by the size of extreme values.
Ungrouped Data is the data you first gather from an experiment or study. The data is raw that is
not sorted into categories, classified, or otherwise grouped. A set of data that is basically list of numbers.

In computing for the median, it is important to remember the following:

1. Arrange the data according to size. This is called an array.
2. Take note of the size of the middle value. If there is an odd number of items, the middle item
is the median. If there is an even number of items, the median is taken as the arithmetic mean of the
values of the central items.

Examples:
A. The number of books loaned from the library during each day of the week were 36, 31, 24,
45, 50.
Solution: Arrange the numbers as 24, 31, 36, 45, 50. There are 5 items and the middle item is 36. The
median is 36.
B. The number of books loaned from the library during another week from Monday to Sunday
were 36, 31, 24, 25, 50, 47. What is the median?
Solution: Arrange the numbers as 24, 25, 31, 36, 47, 50. In this case, there are two middle
numbers: 31 and 36. The median is the average of the middle numbers, that is,
31+36
Md =33.5

Grouped data is the data that has been bundled together in categories or the data that has
been ordered and sorted into groups called classes often displayed in a frequency table.
The method for finding the median in the previous section is applicable when the data are few.
In this case, the data can be arranged I n increasing or decreasing order.
For large quantities of data, the median is computed using a frequency distribution with a
n
cumulative frequency column. The middle item is then determined by where n is the number of
2
items. The cumulative frequency should not be confused with the relative cumulative frequency or
cumulative percent. The former is the total frequency of all scores of the given class interval; the
cumulative percent on the other hand is a quotient expressed in percent by dividing a corresponding
cumulative frequency value by the total number of data.
Take note how the “less than” (<) cumulative frequency is considered.
The median is the sum of the lower limit of the median class and the fractional part of the class
interval size.
To find the median of grouped data, use the formula:
n
Md=L+
2
f( )
−F
i

Where L – exact lower limit of the median class

n - total number of cases
F – “less than” or “equal to” cumulative frequency before the class interval containing
the median.
f – the frequency of the median class
i – size of the class interval
Example:
Find the median of students in two Advanced Algebra classes of Miss Jose.
(f) (L) (F)
Scores Frequency Lower Limit Cumulative Cumulative
Frequency Percent
95-99 5 94.5 100 100.0
90-94 11 89.5 95 95.0
85-89 17 84.5 84 84.0
80-84 25 79.5 67 67.0
75-79 20 74.5 42 42.0
70-74 12 69.5 22 22.0
65-69 7 64.5 10 10.0
60-64 3 59.5 3 3.0
i=5 n=100

n
Solution: n=100 ; =50
2
L=79.5 ; f =42; f =25 ; i=5f=42;f=25;i=5
ber of scores divided by 2, which is equal to 50 is the middle point or the median. It is necessary
to locate this point in the distribution with 50 scores above and below it.
The cumulative frequency close to 50 scores but not exceeding it is the point between the class
intervals 75-79 and 80-84, which is 79.5. This is the exact lower limit (L). The class interval that contains L
is the median class. The frequency f is 25 and the less than cumulative frequency (F) below the median is
42.

Thus, Md=79.5+ ( 50−42

25 )
5+50-42/255

¿ 79.5+1.6.5+1.6
=81.1
Therefore, the median is 81.1. This means that one-half of the students scored above 81.1 and the other
half scored below 81.1.

85, 31, 36. What is the median?
