FLORA

The Brijuni climate is mild and Mediterranean,
with 2.387 sunny hours a year; lots of
sunshine, warmth and humidity favour the
growth of rich vegetation, so that there
are 680 autochthonous and allochthonous
plants on the Brijuni. The largest part of the
green cover comprises holm oak, strawberry
tree, myrtle, laurel and manna ash; rosemary
and other lush evergreen bushes descend all
the way to the coast. Numerous trees have
been brought there from a wider Adriatic
and Mediterranean area, in addition to
plants from distant subtropical countries:
pyramidal, horizontal and Arizona cypress,
Aleppo and Austrian pine, umbrella pine,
Atlantic cedar, cedar of Lebanon and
Arizona, Spanish and Greek fir, Chilean yew,
evergreen broadleaf magnolia, several palm
species, sequoia, eucalyptus, red and white
oleander, mimosa and other exotic trees and
bushes, as well as fruit trees such as orange,
lemon, Kaki Persimmon, fig and vine. Olive is
a constituent part of the unique landscape
of Brijuni. Its exuberant and lush crown and
its impressive truck width endow the micro
location with a distinctive skyline. Among
400 olive trees, the most special is the
1600-year-old so-called “old olive tree.”

FAUNA

In summer and winter months, shadows of
the rich green cover provide a cosy shelter for
two deer species, fallow deer and axis deer, as
well as to mouflon (approx. 1000 of them) It
is the habitat of hare, squirrel and numerous
peacocks that complement the beauty of the
green landscape of the island. Evergreen bushes
are ideal for nesting of nightingale, blackbird,
titmouse, starling and other singing birds. Jay,
hooded crow, ring dove, rock dove and hawk are
permanent inhabitants of the island. Numerous
wild duck species, heron and stork live there
permanently or else, flying over there during
migration, they descend to the especially
developed ornithological site Saline covering
the surface of 7 hectares, the site of three
artificially swamped little lakes. On uninhabited
islands, crest cormorant and seagull find quiet
areas for their nests and for the growth their
young. On the northern border of the island of
Veliki Brijun, in a nine-hectare fenced area, a
Safari Park was established in 1978 as home
to exotic herbivores: zebras, antelopes, zebu
cattle, lamas and the Indian elephant Lanka
-the only elephant in the Republic of Croatia.
One part of the Safari Park hosts the Ethno Park
that presents the Istrian farm, and in particular,
its autochthonous animals such as the Istrian
ox (boškarin), sheep, donkeys and goats.

SUBMARINE WORLD

Sea covers almost 80% of the entire
surface of the National Park. Well-indented
coastline, diversity, configuration of the sea
bottom and specific ecological conditions
all contribute to a large biodiversity and
richness of sea-bottom life community
characteristic of the Northern Adriatic. It is
favoured by good protection and the fact
that there is no extensive tourism in the Park
and no direct sources of pollution. Divers will
enjoy the view of large fish shoals in the
Brijuni underwater. They can observe the
grouper and the surmullet or meet the sea
bass and the gilthead. Almost every stone
hides a conger eel or a crab, in addition to
frequent black umber, dogfish, rays and
an occasional small shark. Nobody will be
indifferent to the sight of beautiful large
marine sponges or small multicoloured
snails, corals, shrimp, shellfish or to the
encounter with the peaceful octopus.
Some other frequent visitors of the Brijuni
are good-natured dolphins and sea turtles.
Permanent inhabitants of the archipelago
such as the largest Mediterranean shellfish,
the noble pen-shell (Pinna nobilis) and
variegated Cnidaria or meadows of sea
flowering plants, home to many species
of fish and various sea organisms, may be
seen by every snorkeller because they are
situated in the shoal.

CULTURAL-HISTORICAL HERITAGE

Around one hundred sites and facilities
with archaeological, cultural and historical
value witness the long presence of man on
the island from the Neolithic settlement of
semi-subterranean sod houses to the elite
tourist destination of the beginning of the
20th century and presidential residence built
in the mid-20th century. Each period left its
trace on the archipelago, and the layered
history of the Brijuni is shown in exhibi-
tions (archaeological, Exhibition of copies of
fresco paintings and Glagolitic inscriptions
of Istria and Kvarner, from memories of an
Old Austrian, photo exhibition Josip Broz
Tito on Brioni and natural history exhibi-
tion). A unique open air Brijuni museum is
complete with over 200 dinosaur footprints,
the terrible reptiles that walked on these ar-
eas 117-100 million years ago. Educational
trail Zelenikovac is a unique combination of
natural and cultural heritage of the island:
25 boards inform visitors of various interest-
ing cultural and historic facts (the lime kiln,
the medieval maritime fi ght in the Fažana
Canal and the old toponym on the peninsu-
la), geological-paleontological phenomena
(dinosaur footprints, fossils of the Nerinea
snail, ripple marks and bone breccia) and the
world of macchia and birds living in the area.
