Statically Indeterminate Systems (Composite Systems)

Statically Indeterminate Systems -
(Composite OR Compound bars)
• When a system comprises of 2 or more members of different materials,
the forces in various members can’t be determined by the principle of
statics alone and such systems are called Statically indeterminate systems
• Additional equations, from deformation conditions of the system
(compatibility equations) are also used

Analysis of Compound or Composite System

• A composite/compound system consists of 2 or more bars of different


materials in parallel
• The sharing of load by each bar can be found by applying the
equilibrium and compatibility equations
• Consider a solid bar enclosed in a hollow tube as shown in fig.
