1
Stress, Strain and change in length in Axially Loaded Members
a) Bars of uniform cross section

• Consider a bar of length L and cross sectional area A under the action of a
force P
• Assume that the bar undergoes a deformation ΔL

2
Stress, Strain and change in length in Axially Loaded Members
b) Bars of varying cross section in steps

3
Principle of Superposition

• The principle of superposition states that, the combined effect of several

loads acting simultaneously on various segments of a body, is equal to the
algebraic sum of the effects of each load acting individually
• Thus each segment can be considered for its equilibrium using free body
diagrams of each segments of the body
• The principle of superposition is applicable to all parameters like stress,
strain and deflection
