Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Surigao del Sur State University is flourishing through the years. Evidently, its increased

population is a significant indicator of how the university is making prestige in its vision towards

excellence. As the population increases, the demands of additional infrastructures are highly

urgent as it tells that the university can stay on track to the success it acquires at this present

time.

However, quite developments that the university is undertaking require parallel facilities

and equipment which will cater the needs of the system. Along with this need is the concern of

establishing a warehouse which will be of great help in providing fast and better services in the

institution.

Research Objective

This research project aims to propose the establishment of a university warehouse for the

purpose of having a place to store variety of materials and equipment necessary for fast and

better services in the university.

Significance of the Study

This research project will be of great importance in the university itself as it will offer

fast and better services in the institution, covering every transaction that its umbrella

agencies/offices will undergo in relation with the purchase, storage, and delivery of materials

recognized as necessity of the university.

Target Beneficiaries/Clients

This research project will be beneficial to the entire system of the university. With a place

to store important materials as purchased by the university, delivery of materials necessary in

providing better services for its students, instructors, clerks, and other clients will be easy and

fast.

Scope and Delimitation

This research project will cover the main campus of Surigao del Sur State University at

Tandag City.

Review of Related Literature

A warehouse is “a commercial building for buffering of supplies, goods or an

intermediate area for storage for production or consumption” Chua and Teo (2008).

Warehouse is a common structure that is used widely in different establishments and

even institutions nowadays. To design a warehouse seems simple, but it is actually involved

complexities. If warehouse design is poor, it can break the productivity of the intended usage of

it.

Warehouses are integral part of the supply chains in which they operate, and therefore

recent trends such as increase of productivity, supplies range proliferation and shortening

customer lead times all have an impact on the roles that warehouses are required to perform

Allan, R. et al, (2010).

This research intends to propose a warehouse with in the vicinity that can give ease and

productivity to the university function as a whole. According to Jixiang Gu et al, (2009)

warehouse design involves five major components to consider in designing. The overall

warehouse structure; sizing and dimensioning; detailed layouts; selecting warehouse equipment

and selecting its operation or purpose. The same research of Jixiang Gu et al, (2009) implies that

the focus is on the operation of the warehouse as it plays important effects on the overall system

if it gives efficient travel time when storage and operation system works simultaneously.

The roles of warehouse are associated with agility, production postponements and time

compression which are recognized trends in warehousing. Thus, inventory has important role on

warehouse in modern supply chains. Baker (2007)

Today’s warehouse requirements are:

 Execute more, smaller transaction

 Handle and store more items

 Provide more product and services customization

 Process more return

At the same time

 Less time to process a need

 Less margin for error Tompkins et all, (1998)

Chapter 2

Methodology

This research project started by identifying the lacking facilities of Surigao del Sur State

University. The researchers asked from the university’s physical plant and facilities office a soft

copy of the institution site and development plan. With this, they identified the need of proposing

a university warehouse. Also, the exact location where this project aims to be built is located

through the data they acquired at the said office. The accessibility of the location is considered

well. The researchers started to conceptualize the design and size of the warehouse to be

proposed. They used an Auto Computer Aided Drawing software in designing. The standard

specifications were also applied to the design.

After the design was finalized, the researchers proceeded to the crucial part of the

designing which is to determine if the structure can suffice to pass the standards set by the NSCP

or National Structural Code of the Philippines. This process involved the use of another software

called STAAD or Structural Analysis And Design, which will determine if the structure will fail

or not.

As the design was assured to be on standards and proven to pass the specifications, the

researchers started to determining the itemized costs of the labor force and the materials needed

in building the warehouse and the estimated costs of the project as a whole.

To finalize the whole research project, the researchers started to arrange it, ready to be

checked by the adviser for some changes of errors not seen by the researchers.

CHAPTER 3

RESULTS

Discussion

The exact location of the warehouse is determined and finds to be accessible for it is near

on the third gate and to the concrete pathways of the university.

Based upon the data gathered from the supply office, it shows that numerous numbers of

materials and equipment are owned and purchased by the university every year. The supplies are

categorized as office supplies, machines and appliances, sanitation and others. These supplies

aren’t enough to be stored in a university based warehouse at the same time permanently, but the

researchers determined that only supplies categorized as “others” are the ones that could be

permanently stored in a warehouse considering its usage is for especial occasions only. Those

remaining supplies are temporarily stored for evaluating, inventory and accounting and

afterwards it will be distributed to the different offices of the university.

Hence, the researchers come up with the enough dimensions of the warehouse. 12 meters

long by 8 meters wide with 3 meters’ clear height. Other details and designs are on the

appendices of this research.

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSION

In today’s current setting of Surigao Del Sur State University as it moves towards the

benchmark of success having a warehouse is a must, as it delivers safe custody of materials and

equipment purchased and it assures that every material and equipment is keep properly in order

to extend its life for the future usage. Therefore, the researchers thereby concluded that

warehouse structure for Surigao Del Sur State University main campus is necessary.

Based upon the data gathered from the supply office, it shows that numerous numbers of

materials and equipment are owned and purchased by the university every year. The supplies are

categorized as office supplies, machines and appliances, sanitation and others. These supplies

aren’t enough to be stored in a university based warehouse at the same time permanently, but the

researchers determined that only supplies categorized as “others” are the ones that could be

Hence, the researchers come up with the enough measurements of the warehouse. 12

meters long by 8 meters wide with 3 meters’ clear height with an estimated cost of 3,501,886.36.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the proposed design of the warehouse, the researchers recommend to follow the

standard way and specification in building the structure. It should be assured that what has been

designed must be properly implemented during the construction. Further review of an expert is

encouraged.
