Freeform Poetry II

Elizabeth Perkins
For Professor Michaels

My feelings are all over the place

I look for the answer
All while flinching nervously
My eyes are completely covered
And my heart remains a mystery

It’s hard to understand

The world is dyed in a purple hue
I take one, two, three steps
And can’t close the distance at all

But with my mood

The world shifts into a different color
Suddenly everything turns pink
And my heart can’t keep up

Don’t know if I’m sad or happy or something else

But I’m feeling sore from all that walking
Pain doesn’t always have to be negative
If I look back and see the distance
Suddenly the ache feels worth it

Without prior notice

My heart stops working as it used to
I feel it dance instead
Four, five, six steps
I keep getting closer
With my mood the world warps
Suddenly everything is a bright red
And the air is candied apple sweet
But I never really liked those much
I have sensitive teeth

And the toothaches I’d get

Were never quite worth it
Looking at this apple with a bite on it
I don’t feel any joy
Just the need to brush my teeth

As I walk I run into a signpost

I can’t read what it says
But my heart feels comfortable again
If I have to walk for days to feel like this again
I don’t mind an endless cycle of muscle pain

Seven, eight, nine steps

Suddenly the world changes around me
There’s not a hue surrounding me
And rather than confusion I finally understand myself
Emotions are a maze

I don’t mind feeling lost in life

But I’d like to always find my way is possible
Kaleidoscopes are nice
But not being inside one
