We are learning the Kurals that talk about - AhUP® & the quality
of self-control, under the broad topic of - mental wellness.
This Kural tells that,
If we need real peace and happiness in life - we must preserve
this quality of self-control. It means - we have to consistently follow and
practise self-control - throughout our life.
Every human being wants to earn lot of wealth in life. Most
importantly, we have to earn this - value of self-control and humility.
Earlier, we saw that, we have to earn love - we need to cultivate
love - in an intelligent manner.
Similarly, even after reaching great heights in life - one has to
always have - this quality of humility.
We have to protect and safeguard the quality of humility.
We take so much care to protect our house and other properties
in the external world.
We don’t care about our physical health, mental health and
intellectual health.
People are deluded - they think that money and external wealth
are going to protect them.
Proper exercise and diet alone - will help us - to protect our physical
health.
Being disciplined in work -having enough sleep - being organized
and disciplined in intake of food - exercise - These alone will help in
protecting our physical health.
Similarly, there are so many aspects for mental health. We, as
Jivas living in the human body - have the responsibility of taking care of
our physical and mental health.
Just as we protect our possessions, we have to protect and
preserve the virtue of humility.

There is nothing - that brings more happiness to the Jiva - than
this.
The word BUP® occurs frequently in Tirukkural.
We saw in AÓß Á¼²ÖzuÀ - the chapter on Dharma -

There is nothing that brings more happiness than Dharma, there
is nothing that causes more harm - than giving up Dharma.
We also saw that,

I wanted to quote this Kural.
By following Dharma - one gets moksha and wealth. What can
give more happiness for the Jiva - other than Dharma?
There also, the word E°ºUS which means Jiva is used.
Tiruvalluvar talked about AÓ® or Dharma - in general. Then
afterwards - he is teaching the various aspects of Dharma - one by one.
Love is one aspect of Dharma. Humility or self-control is another
aspect of Dharma.
We have to protect this quality of humility, we must possess it.
“The one who serves the elders with humility, will be blessed with
long life, deep knowledge, fame and courage” - says a Sanskrit verse.
Bhagavan Sri Krishna defines the penance (Tapas) at the physical
level as follows -
deva dvija guru praajna pujanam saucham aarjavam
brahmacharyam ahimsaa cha shaariram tapa uchyate
Prostrating before Devas, Brahmanas, Gurus and men of wisdom
and serving them is Tapas at the physical level. Not only that, observing
chastity, cleanliness, honesty and non violence are also part of Tapas
at the physical level.
Let us observe this virtue of humility and sense control and do
good to ourselves and the society.
