DESIGN OF BOLTS

(From table 8.1 IS-800 we assume some values)

1. Allowable shear stress in bolts in clearance hole τ vf=80Mpa

2. Allowable tensile stress in bolts in clearance hole σ tf=120Mpa

3. Allowable Bearing stress in bolts in clearance hole σ pf=80Mpa

(Bearing value depends on plate thickness)

Embedment length /Depth depends on Bond stress

From IS-456 Table 21 clauses (ANNEX-B, B.2.3)

Side Face distances for Bolts

Bolt position is always kept well inside of base plate as per design criteria of shear.

Base plates are always kept within the core area of column/pedestal. (Normally all side
minimum 50mm cover is required – inside of main bar)

Example: suppose we assume 20 dia. Bolt & 8 mm thick gusset plate

- Bearing value shall be=8*20*250 =40000 N

- Shear value calc. by =bolts c/s area*80 = (pi/4)*20^2*80 =25133 N

- if bolts in double shear just double the above value

- Tension value depends on root area of bolt =root area*120 = 245*120= 29400 N

Embedment length /Depth depends on Bond stress

From IS-456 Table 21 clauses (ANNEX-B, B.2.3)

FOR M30 GRADE Concrete τbd =1 N/mm^2

Bond stress = (axial tension/peripheral area)

L = (29400/pi*d*l) = L= 468mm
