1. Declaration of Originality of Work from the Student and Internship
Supervisor
I, Siddhant Swain, studying in Third Year of the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Programme of
the Kirit P. Mehta School of Law, hereby declare that all the contents of this report
are original and not plagiarised from any other report. It has been made in accordance
with the provided guidelines by the University.

2. Acknowledgment
I would like to thank SVKM’s NMIMS Kirit P. Mehta School of Law and its efficient
Placement Cell for providing me with the opportunity to intern under Advocates and
Consultants, A.N. Shaikh and Associates by allowing the academic structure to be
accommodating enough for such learning experience and helping the overall
development of the students. I would also like to thank all the professors that helped
us with our internships along with a special mention to Professor Ishnoor Arora, the
faculty supervisor that I was appointed to.

3. Summary of the Internship Work

I had got the internship through the Placement Cell, albeit an interview was pending
for the finalisation of the students. My first day at work was all about knowing the
whereabouts of the work space. Advocate Adnan Shaikh and Advocate Shipra Tanna
were my supervisors but I, mainly worked under Advocate Shipra Tanna, who
specialises in criminal and family matters. My internship duration was from 06th June
to 29th June 2019 and in those 3 weeks, I came across variety of matters and learned a
lot as to how to deal with the court proceedings and clients and how to practically
apply the statutes and provisions to different cases depending on the circumstances.
My first interaction with a client of ours was a very moving one as I came across a
disturbing case of domestic violence and torture on the wife by the husband. Client
interactions were the most interesting part of the internship period as there were a lot
of clients from different backgrounds and everyone had a different view as to how the
law favours them and we, as lawyers and consultants were trying to keep them
optimistic about the case as well as make them aware of the ground realities that one
has to go through in the litigation. After Client interactions, I learned one of the most
important aspects of filing a petitions- drafting. I, under the guidance of my seniors
assisted in drafting several written statements and criminal writ petitions. Drafting
constituted as my major time of internship along with regular Court visits to different
Courts such as Small Causes Court, City Civil Court, High Court and the Family
Court. I was found very comfortable in the Court environment interacting with the
judicial clerks, stenos and typists. I had a very critical assessment of how the Courts
tend to function but on the other hand, I heard some very interesting arguments in
family courts. All in all, it was a very realistic experience and I got to know that how
things actually function in Courts, drafting petitions was a tiring but a learning
experience which will be further put to use in different internships.

transparent way and commit themselves to time-bound and cost-effective advice that
protects the clients’ interests every time. The company has gathered a team of devoted
experts with rich experience in juridical help. AN Shaikh and Associates have put a
great emphasis on the holistic development of all fields of law which has been very
beneficial for the clients’ base.

5. An Overview of the Internship Work

The nature of the work done during the internship was majorly that of drafting of
several written statements, criminal writ petitions, plaints and legal notices coupled
with client meetings and briefing the client about the case details. Court visits were a
regular feature which helped us know the ground reality of the functioning of the
Courts in Mumbai. It was an amazing experience as drafting petitions and visiting
Courts and interacting with the JC’s to help facilitate our matters. I also learned a bit
of Marathi in the due course of the internship which was necessary as the lower courts
in Mumbai function in Marathi. I could not get a hold of the language but it was a
new experience and it made me more confident while talking to the lawyers, JC’s or
even the judge sometimes.
Client meetings were the most important feature in taking any case at hand because
the client always used to come with high expectations and it was the duty of our team
to make the client aware of the repercussions and the consequences of taking the
matters to the Courts.
6. Experience Sharing and Conclusion
As a part of NMIMS, Kirit P. Mehta School of Law’s policy, students were required
to intern at a law firm or a corporate house or under any advocate in their 3rd year of
college. Prior to this internship, I had a similar experience of working under Senior
Advocate Feroz Shaikh’s legal NGO, BEND Foundation but had very limited
exposure of day to day working of the Courts, drafting and filing of paperwork in
Courts. Therefore, I was excited as well as nervous at the same time.

Timings: Monday to Saturday (12 AM to 730 PM). Time was not a constraint during
my internship. The days when I had to report to the office, the timing was as stated
above but when I had to report for the Court hearing, it usually was according to the
time allotted to the case hearing. Some times, I was asked to stay back till 830-9 PM
and reach early as 7 AM to the Courts.

First impression of AN Shaikh and Associate’s’ office was decent. The office is small
but well maintained and has a very professional look to it. The office is concise and is
not very lavish. Majorly, I was visiting Courts for the hearing of the matters and
whenever I stayed in the office, I was engaged in the drafting work and also there was
not much to explore as the office was concise and small.
I was given research work initially, but later on I was handled with drafting of Plaints,
written statements and criminal writ petitions. I was also assigned to sit with the client
and brief them about the case after detailed discussion with my seniors. There were 4-
5 works assigned to me on daily basis. I was the intern, whom was allotted the most
court visits because I was found to be very comfortable in the Court environment. So,
filing of applications, getting the notary stamps and all the small but important works
were also done by me on the matter that we were working upon. The most important
thing is that the intern’s work gets due recognition and if the work is really good, you
earn the associates faith and get to work on important matters.
I entered there with some prior experience and ended up learning more, and I can say
that 3 weeks’ internship at AN Shaikh and Associates was worth doing. I was treated
properly and taught about every new thing very calmly by seniors. This internship
made me realise the importance of practical knowledge required in field of law and
overall was a very wonderful experience. I was also offered a continuation of the
internship by my mentor and further I received appreciation mails from the associates.
Looking forward to working again at a law firm in coming internships with a very
hope that they would also provide me with abundance of knowledge and experience
as this internship did.
