Chapter: Simultaneous Equation, Remainder and Factor theorem
Total marks: 50, Time : 1 hour

Solve the following simultaneous equations:

1. 2x + 3y = 17 and 7x – y = 13 [6]

2. y = x2 – 6x +5 and y + x = 11 [6]

3. The remainder when 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 5𝑥 3 − 6𝑥 2 + 𝑘𝑥 − 3 is divided by 𝑥 − 1

is equal to the remainder obtained when the same expression is divided
by 𝑥 − 2. Find the value of k. [7]

4. Given that x+2 is a common factor of ax2 + (a + k)x + 6 and

(k – a)x2 + 4x – a, find the value of a and of k. [7]

5. For all the values of x. find the values of A, B, C

4𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 7 = 𝐴(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 3) + 𝐵(𝑥 − 1) + 𝐶 [6]

6. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 – 3𝑝𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 4𝑝 where p is an integer.

Given that (x – 4) is a factor of f(x)
(a) show that the value of p is 3 [5]

Using this value of p,

(b) find the remainder when f(x) is divided by (x + 2) [4]
(c) factorise f(x) completely [5]
(d) solve the equation 2𝑥 3 – 3𝑝𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 4𝑝 = 0 [4]
