Tutorial 1 – Q1
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

A concrete pile has four prestressing strands, each having an area

of 100 mm2 and tensioned to an effective prestress of 1000 MPa.
Determine the eccentricity of the axial load that would result in
the neutral axis being located along the diagonal a-a at ultimate
limit state. Given that: fcu = 40 MPa, Ec = 28 GPa.

Tutorial 1 – Q2
A reinforced concrete short column, hexagonal in cross-
section, contains six 25 mm diameter longitudinal bars and
is subjected to an eccentric compression load. Given that
fcu = 40 MPa; fy/γm = 400 MPa and Es = 200 GPa, calculate
the design ultimate load Pu that the column can carry at an
eccentricity, e = 275 mm

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

A square column is subject to axial loading and biaxial

bending. Material strengths are fcu = 40 MPa; and fy/γm = 400
MPa. (a) Find the unique combination of Pu, Mux, and Muy
that will produce incipient failure with the neutral axis located
as shown. (b) Find the angle between the neutral axis and
the eccentricity axis, the latter defined as the line from the
column centre to the point of load.

Tutorial 1- Q4 (2004 Exam Q)

Check whether the section shown in Fig. Q-1 is able to resist an
axial load of 2686 kN acting at its centroid with a bending
moment of 1200 kNm about the axis x-x at ultimate limit state.
Given that: fcu = 40 MPa, fy/γm = 400 MPa; Es = 200 GPa, and
each bar has a cross-sectional area of 1256 mm2. Assume a
stress block of stress intensity of 0.45fcu over a depth equal to
0.9 times the neutral axis for concrete in compression. [Hint:
Assume neutral axis at x-x.]
