64 QAM for HSDPA
Introduction

• Higher-order-modulation promises to achieve higher peak data rates for

HSDPA in micro and pico cells in low-to-medium speed mobility
scenarios.

• The purpose of this task is to provide first basic performance results for
a HSDPA system that is capable of using 64 QAM transmissions.

• System level simulation results will be provided for FTP traffic,

Proportional Fair (PF) scheduler, sectorized Macro and Micro
Manhattan Grid deployment

• Detailed information about system setup, simulation assumptions and

simulation results will be given

Limitations

• Implementation specific imperfections (EVM) in the BTS TX and UE RX are not

considered at Link Level and especially 64 QAM will suffer from these
imperfections [4]
• Synchronization channel (SCH) interference is not considered at Link Level [5]
• Advanced Link Adaptation and modifications in CQI table could bring better
performance
• Performance for 64QAM investigated for a user velocity of 3km/h, higher velocity
would cause performance degradation by worse channel estimation (Link Level
investigation necessary)
• FTP traffic scenario with 300kByte filesize was assumed. Better gains from
64QAM with larger filesize or even Full Buffer traffic are expected

Proposed next steps and open issues

• High required SINR for 10%BLER for 64QAM TFC´s with lower TBS to be further
investigated. For 64 QAM TFC´s better performance already visible with
advanced SINR estimation at Link Level (see slide A-1). Generation of new Link
Level set containing QPSK,16QAM and 64QAM TFC´s with advanced SINR
estimation algorithm already in progress
• Setup of new CQI tables for System Level Simulation according to the new
generated Link Level files if necessary
• New System Level Simulation Campaign to verify influence of the new Link Level
files and changed CQI tables

Summary and Conclusions

• Please note that there are open issues with the Link Level files used in this simulation series and therewith
gains achieved with 64QAM are probably a bit too low (see slide 5 and A1)

• Small Macro scenario (ISD1000m)

– channel conditions not favourable enough to earn large gains from 64QAM
(high required SINR)
– no significant gain in average cell throughput from 64 QAM
– 64 QAM improves peak data rates (SISO: +26% in peak User Throughput)
• Micro Cell scenario
– better gains compared to Macro scenario
– 64QAM increases average cell throughput (SISO: +7% in mean cell Throughput)
– 64QAM increases peak data rate (SISO: +32% in peak User Throughput)
