Jamestown Lifescape ​Image Analysis 

Activity One: ​Use the image to answer the following questions. Some answers are given for 
you. Highlighted items are places where you must type your answers. 
 
1. The title of the image is: ​Jamestown Lifescape 
2. The artist is: ​Keith Rocco 
3. Write a brief description of the scene depicted in the painting: ​This painting has 
pictures how they dress. Also it shows the lifestyle of people .  
 
4. Read the following terms: 
a. Imagery​: words and phrases - and in this case, images - that appeal to the five 
senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) 
b. Mood​: the emotional response of the audience; how the artwork makes you feel 
(this definition is the same if you were reading text instead of viewing art); 
remember, MOOD is ME - how something makes ME feel 
5. Using details from the painting, create and insert a chart below with 1 box for each 
sense (Taste/Smell, Touch, Sound, & Sight). Then, put ​at least 3 items​ that you think 
someone in the picture would notice with that sense in each square. 

 
6. Define ​theme​: ​the central message of the work (in this case, artwork) expressed in a 
sentence; universal to the human experience, meaning something that applies to 
everyone’s life 
7. Look back at your imagery/senses chart and think about how the details that create 
the mood of the painting show the artist’s statement about the life of early American 
settlers. ​Now write a thematic statement about the painting below. What does this 
Jamestown Lifescape ​have to say about the life of the people in the painting?
