together

Time: 50 Minutes

Topic: Money Students utilise appropriate strategies for


adding small amounts of money together.

Prior Knowledge Preparation/Organisation/Resources


Students have already: - Shopping game printed and laminated
Identified and named key features of coins - Play money in bags
Add coins of the same denomination together
Skip counted coins to make a total amount
Created amounts using multiple strategies
Ordered items from least to most expensive
Showed monetary amounts using coins in multiple ways
Add coin together to make amounts
Record values and add to find a total
Solve worded problems involving money
Lesson Sequence Reflection Comments
Recap last lessons worded problems involving shopping
list.

Explain that today they are going to go shopping and there


are 5 different stores in the room.

Pick a child to demonstrate the game (saying what you will


buy and how much you are giving to the shop keeper)

Choose 5 capable children (pink or green) to be the shop


keepers for the first round

Instruct that students in the blue group can only buy 1 item
per store but people from the pink and green group should
try and buy more than one item at a time.

Encourage the use of manners and students must state what


they are buying and how much they are handing over

Choose one child to own the bank and hand out money that

students ask for if they run out.

Pause the game when necessary to return money to the


bank and choose new shop owners.

Differentiation

Students have already been differentiated into groups based


on ability

Blue (Low)

Pink (Middle)

Green (High)

Blue group is only instructed to buy one items at each


station and other groups are extended by having to add
together amounts to purchase items

Monitor Blue students to track their progress
