Lab 5 – Fundamental Electronics Instrumentation and Introduction to Circuit Maker Safety &
Lab Procedure

The lab technicians will go through lab rules and safety issues at the beginning of the lab session.

Aim:

The aim of this lab is to:

learn the usage of basic electronics lab equipment, and

do simple circuit analysis using the Circuit Maker software.

Equipment:

All equipment mounted on a typical electronics workbench such as power supply, oscilloscope, signal
generator, and multimeter

3×Randomly selected resistors

BNC to BNC cables

PC installed with Circuit Maker

Instructions:

Part I – Reading Resistor Values

Your lab group is required to determine the resistance of the three random resistors given to you using
the resistor color coding system (also available on Moodle). Next, use the multimeter to measure the
resistance and note down all your results in Table 8.1. Also, calculate the percentage error between the
measured and calculated values.

Part II – Power Supply Basics

Using the digital power supply, generate DC voltages at increments of 2.5V from 0 – 30V. Use the
meter on the power supply for this. At each increment, measure the voltage using the multimeter. Note
your results in Table 8.2.

Draw a graph of generated DC voltage versus percentage error in the space given below.
Part III – Calibrating the Oscilloscope

Using the probe, check the calibration of the Oscilloscope. Your demonstrator will help with this.
(Note: The operator’s manual for the Bringo Oscilloscope can be found on the EE102 Moodle page.)

Part IV – Using the Oscilloscope

Using the BNC (Bayonet Neill–Concelman) cable, connect the signal generator to the Digital
Oscilloscope. Generate the following waveforms with Vp-p = 2V:

Sine Wave @ 20Hz, 1KHz, 15kHz

Square Wave @ 30Hz, 2kHz, 26kHz

Triangular Wave @ 15Hz, 3kHz, 30kHz

You must use the oscilloscope to ensure that the dimension of the above waves is correct. Do NOT
rely on the function generator. Graph one of each of the above waves below.
Part V – Introduction to Circuit Maker

Open the Circuit Maker software on your computer. Browse through the software window. You will
find a list of components on the left side of the window. By browsing or searching, place the
components as shown in Fig. 1.

Next, go to the Simulation menu and select Analog Mode. Then click on the Run Analog Simulation
icon. Measure the voltage at each terminal of the components using the Probe Tool. (Label each point
in Fig. 1 and then note the corresponding voltage in the space given below.)

Modify the circuit by replacing the battery with a signal generator as shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2

Find the voltage at each terminal of the components using the Probe Tool, similar to what you did for
Fig. 1, and note down the voltages below. Also, what difference do you observe in the two readings?

Discussion (Discuss your results in the space given below)
