storage virtualization storage recovery (DR)
systems
• Brand-new hardware architecture delivering
industry-leading performance and specifications:
The V3 converged storage systems employ 16 Gbit/s Fibre
Channel and 10 Gbit/s FCoE host ports and provide up to 40
GB/s system bandwidth, 4 TB cache capacity, and 8 PB storage
capacity.
• Convergence of SAN and NAS: SAN and NAS are
converged to provide elastic storage, simplify service
deployment, improve storage resource utilization, and reduce
total cost of ownership (TCO).
• Outstanding scalability and reliability: Up to eight
controllers and linear growth of performance and capacity are
supported. Loads are balanced among controllers that serve as
hot backup for each other, achieving higher reliability.
Online Resources are centrally stored, simplifying resource
deduplication management. Virtualization High

Software architecture (1)
 Protocol layer (NAS and SAN protocols)
 Implements NAS and SAN interface protocol processing.
 Replication layer
 Implements value-added functions for LUNs and file systems, for example, remote
replication, clone, and HyperMirror.
 Space management layer
 Allocates and manages underlying space of LUNs and file systems.
 Implements the COW and ROW space allocation mechanism.
 Storage pool
 Divides space provided by physical disks into fine-grained blocks to distribute services
to all disks, bringing disk performance into full play.
 Improves the speed of reconstructing bad disks.
 Implements tiered storage.

SmartVirtualization
 SmartVirtualization takes over
heterogeneous LUNs without implementing
RAID 2.0+ block virtualization.

 Heterogeneous LUNs support HyperSnap

and HyperReplication, but do not support
SmartThin, SmartTier, or HyperClone.

 When snapshot or replication is configured

for heterogeneous LUNs, they are
automatically allocated space by the storage
pool to which they belong for snapshot
COW.

 By default, V3 converged storage systems

implements write back for heterogeneous
Storage pool LUNs.

SmartMigration

Application scenarios

 Migrating data on peer vendors' products by working

ESX with the SmartVirtualization.
 Conversion between thick LUNs and thin LUNs.

 RAID level relocation.

Benefits

LUN LUN  Online LUN migration is available, ensuring service

Migration continuity.
 Data on the source LUN is completely copied to the

target LUN, ensuring data consistency.

 Services can be migrated between third-party

storage systems.

 The management view provided to tenants supports:

 Disk (LUN) management: Tenants can view status and capacity of disks and the information list
mapped by disks to hosts.

 Performance monitoring: Tenants can view performance data, such as read and write bandwidths, of
disks.

Data Reduction

All-zero data does not

occupy storage space.

Data Reduction
 This feature can be used to reduce the storage space that is occupied by data. It is only applicable to thin LUNs.
 The data that is newly written into storage arrays is detected to ensure that all-zero data does not occupy
storage space.
 Two data reduction methods:

 When all-zero data is written into a storage device, the storage device does not allocate storage space to

the data.
 When all-zero data is written into a storage device, the storage space that has been allocated is

reclaimed.
 Data Reduction can be enabled only when thick LUNs are converted into thin LUNs.

SmartCache

 SSDs are used as the secondary

cache for RAM cache.

 Read cache is supported.

 Each controller has an exclusive

SmartCache pool. An SSD belongs
to only one SmartCache pool.

 SmartCache partitions are

supported.

 SmartCache partitions are available

SmartCache
to LUNs and file systems.

CIFS/SMB
 In 1996, Microsoft renamed SMB as Common Internet File System
(CIFS) and developed many new functions.

 CIFS is a general term for Server Message Block (SMB). SMB includes
SMB 1.0, SMB 2.0, and SMB 3.0.

 SMB is a client/server and request/response protocol.

NDMP

NDMP scope

 The network data management protocol (NDMP) is a management protocol

focusing on the management of backup process between data sources and
backup devices. (NDMP considers file systems as data sources.)

FTP/HTTP
 Used to transfer files between remote servers and local hosts, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is
a common protocol for file transfer over IP networks.

 The FTP protocol is an application-layer protocol in the TCP/IP protocol family.

 TCP port 20 is used to transfer data and TCP port 21 is used to transfer control messages.
Basic FTP operations are described in RFC959.

 Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is

used for communications between
browsers and web servers and pushes
web documents over Internet.

 HTTP specifies how web clients request

web pages from web servers and how
web servers send web pages to web
clients.

SmartQuota
 SmartQuota is a resource (capacity) control
technology and is used to manage directory
quotas, including quotas related to capacities
and number of files.
 SmartQuota checks whether the consumed
capacity and the number of involved files of
each I/O request exceed the preset quota.
Therefore, SmartQuota decreases system
performance.
 If the hard quota is exceeded, the I/O request is
rejected and a message is sent to users
indicating that the space is insufficient.
 If the hard quota check passes, the I/O request
is processed.
 If the soft quota is exceeded, an alarm is
reported.

SmartLock (File system WORM)
 Write once read many (WORM) is a write once technology that allows a file to enter the
protection state after data is written into it.

 A file in the protection state can be read but cannot be deleted, modified, or renamed.

 WORM applies to file archiving.

 Currently, V3 converged storage systems supports compliance WORM only.
