INTRODUCTION
Lighting plays a very important role in our lives and many people
underestimate how important it is and how crucial it is to our well-being.
Like many other animals our bodies respond to light which regulates our
circadian rhythms. If you do not receive the correct signals at the correct
time than this will have a significant impact on your health. Your circadian
rhythm is effectively your body’s natural clock, which regulates your mood,
appetite, digestion, sleep length and quality and it has a profound impact
on your energy levels.

Suspension light is a lone light fixture that hangs from the ceiling usually
suspended by a cord, chain, or metal rod. Pendant lights are often used in
multiples, hung in a straight line over kitchen countertops and dinette sets
or sometimes in bathrooms. Pendants come in a huge variety of sizes and
vary in materials from metal to glass or concrete and plastic. Many modern
pendants are energy-saving low voltage models and some use halogen or
fluorescent bulbs.

Smart lighting is a lighting

RESEARCH METHODS

I started with my secondary

research where my main aim was to
understand the basics about existing
lighting technologies. The first step
was to understand suspension
lighting and commercial spaces to
move forward with the selection of
space.

For my primary research, I visited

few office spaces and I also
conducted a Google Survey online,
to understand the mind set people
working in offices in termsof lighting
in their environment. I continued
my research by making several mind
maps and by doing photo journaling.

GOOGLE SURVEYS
The google Survey done, had a set of questions asking people working in
offices around the world. The target audience for this Survey was mainly
people working in day shifts as well as night shifts.

The survey was given to 70-75 people, on the basis of the survey, the
analysis was that people working in the night shift specially would like to
control the light above them as they don’t working with bright white light
during the whole day.

Amongst the commercial spaces, I did visit various spaces and on the basis
of that I did a Space Ananlysis Test to identify mt oppurtunity area.

For my project, I will be looking at Co-working spaces which is more like a

have a fun work space/environment around.

The first concept is about working with just

The vision for the design was to come up with something economic,
FINAL CONCEPT simple yet able to be versatile. The design focuses on creating a cohesive
environment that enhances the feeling of well-being and productivity
of the office staff and a flexible lighting plan that enables employees to
perform tasks comfortably, effectively. The luminaire is a sleek and simple
design that allows the employees to control the color temperature of the
light above their work space/ bench. The light is also envisioned with a
controller, that allows the user to change the color of the light from while to
yellow range. The light can also be used to create an ambient environment
in different spaces in an office. The light is easy to maintain and service, as
the structure has been made in different parts in order to re-assemble.
The Luminaire is minimal, in order to give a modern yet, industrial look.

54 55
The angle is given keeping in mind the aesthectic knowledge of the design.
Also, after trying out different angles for the light, it was identified that this
particular angle will avoid the light to reflect directly on desk.

SKETCHES -
In today’s time, the employees usually use laptops or desktops for their
work, so if the luminaire would be flat without any bent or angle, the light
would directly fall on the desk and reflect on the screen of the system.

Therefore, a suitable angle to the luminaire avoids these problems and

distributes the light equally and in adequate amount.

GOALS -

• Create a cohesive environment that enhances the feeling of

well-being and productivity of the office staff.

• Create a flexible lighting plan that enables employees to

perform tasks comfortably, effectively, and safely.

• Integrate and balance ambient, task, accent, and decorative

lighting into each area of the office.

• Allow a comfortable transition from space to space.

• Design a lighting plan for long-term employee comfort, with a

proper balance of energy savings and lighting quality.

• Integrate and control daylight to improve employee moral and
