The document is a reflection from a pre-service teacher on participating in EALD levelling with an experienced teacher. EALD levelling involves analyzing student work samples against the Language and Literacy Levels to assess English language development and inform teaching. The pre-service teacher helped level narrative and persuasive texts from 7 EALD students. It took time to analyze each text against the criteria and determine the appropriate proficiency level. The process demonstrated making consistent judgements, an APST graduate level focus area.

EALD levelling 5.3: Make consistent and comparable judgements
Explanation of current knowledge and understanding:
- EALD levelling is the moderation of EALD student work samples against the Language and Literacy Levels. - The Language and Literacy levels are an assessment used to analyse student knowledge about the English language and how it works to make meaning and how to use language appropriately and effectively in varied contexts. - It is used as a form of documenting student progress and should be used to inform programming and planning - In my first week my supervising teacher had the class construct one persuasive text and one narrative under test conditions. She then collected the work samples from the 7 EALD students for levelling. - The process of levelling involved my mentor teacher and I analysing each text against the criteria. We would note their language use and ability to make meaning with purpose. We would then choose the appropriate level which describes their current ability.
Explanation of how this demonstrates APST focus area graduate level
The process of levelling involved critically analysing students work against a set criteria. As I was not completely familiar with the criteria it was a long process to find which level the text was best aligned with. With the assistance of my supervising teacher we were able to determine that the majority of students had improved and increased a level since the beginning of the year. However their literacy and language levels are still well below that of other students their age.
