John Eliz A. Tañafranca

A Daring Rescue
Andrea Castro was a daring seafarer. She was a tall and big
woman, who had been working on a ship all her life. The ship had been
her second home, since her father became the master captain of a big
shipping company. The ship, when in port, had been playground when
she was young.

She had been crossing the sea for years. Transporting sugar,
rice, lumber, and people from Cagayan de Oro to Cebu, she followed a
regular route. Her face and body had been darkened by the continued
exposure to the sun and rain. Her face was as black as the darkest
moonless night.

Andrea had been known to be strong and brave enough to help

haul the ship up the river against the strongest current. She found
every trip exciting and challenging. She was always in high spirits every
time the ship left the port. She was treated as an equal by the rest of
the workers, and everybody respected her. It was said that she wore a
necklace of fresh water pearls around her neck. She added one pearl
every time she would defeat a man in a fight.

One time, the ship left the port on a cloudy morning. The deck
had passengers but the ship carried more cargo. Soon after, the
weather had a sudden turn-about. Strong winds starting to blow and
shake the ship.

All of a sudden, there was a sickening thud! The ship had run
aground against a big rock. The howling wind and rain swallowed the
cries of the passengers.

Once gain Andrea ran to the captain’s deck. “Give me the wheel. I
can take this ship back. I know the sea.

And then they were rescued by the coast authorities.

The story about Andrea’s daring rescue has become a legend in

their region.
