C-C Bond Formation
C-C bond formation----is making C-C bond—construction of
complex molecules from simple building blocks.
Some of these reactions are so important that they are
named after the scientist who developed them (e.g
Girgnard & Claisen condensation).
One of the fundamental way of C-C bond formation is a
reaction between a nucleophilic and an electrophilic carbon.
• C- nucleophiles : Enolates, imine anions, enamines…etc
• C-electrophiles : alkylating and acylation agents…..etc

C-C Bond Formation
• C-electrophiles : alkylating and acylation agents…..etc

• C- nucleophiles : Enolates, imine anions, enamines…etc

– Aldehydes (alkylation/acylation of aldehyde

enolates is not very common. One reason is that
aldehydes are rapidly converted to aldol addition
products by base).
– Ketones
– Esters (Ester enolates are somewhat less stable
than ketone enolates because of the potential for
elimination of alkoxide).
– Amides

– Nitriles
– And their derivatives

Unwanted Side Reactions

Carbonyl compound must not act as an electrophile

when it is intended to be a nucleophile

- 2 examples

C-C Bond formation--Carbonyl group as an Nucleophile
Nucleophilic substitution can be viewed as C-C bond formation.

Primary groups are the best alkylating agents…

Secondary groups are less reactive…gives lower yields
Tertiary and aryl groups are unreactive.
