LEARNING PLAN

Pharmacology and Therapeutics

First Semester AY 2020 – 2021

Modular Course Design for Pharmacology and Therapeutics:

This course directs students to learn the Fundamentals of Pharmacology involving

key principles governing what the body does to a drug and, in turn, what a drug
does to the body. At the end of the course students will develop higher order level
of thinking to correlate knowledge in daily patient care.

Course Period August 10 – September 26, 2020 (Prelim)

September 28 – November 14, 2020 (Mid term)
November 16 – January 16, 2021 (Pre-Final)
January 18 - March 26, 2020 (Final)
Course length Each module is 6-8 weeks long. New lessons are
released weekly, and material remains available until
the course closes. Expect to spend 3-6 hours per course per
week.

Workload
The amount of work required from students to budget their time to fit pharmacology
course in their entire semester schedule. Five workload components to each module.

Component Description Remarks

2 No. of Lecture hours Actual contact hours per week
2 No. of Tutorial hours / SGD Actual contact hours per week
2 No. of Laboratory hours Actual contact hours per week
Pertains to assignments, independent
No. of hours for projects, studies, fieldwork, and other forms of
2 assignments, fieldwork, etc continuous assessment that contribute
No. of hours for preparatory work towards the final grade of the module.
This refers to the number of hours a
student is expected to spend each week in
preparing for lectures and tutorials.

Course title Pharmacology
Gullas College of Medicine, Inc.
Course code MED 211
Learning Plan No. –MODULE II-E
Duration 3 hours in a week
For 4 weeks
Unit Topic AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
MODULE II-E SKELETAL MUSCLE RELAXANTS
DRUGS ACTING ON THE NEUROMUSCULAR JUNCTION

Intended Learning By the end of this course, student should be able to:
Outcomes 1. Identify the fundamental principles of
pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and pply the
pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles that
describe drug actions in humans. (1D)
2. Convey information, in written and oral formats,
across all types of audiences, venues and media in a
manner that can be easily understood. (2P)
3. Lead and manage health care teams (3P)
4. Engage in research activities (4P)
5. Collaborate within interprofessional teams (5I)
Learning Objectives: By the end of this module, student should be able to:
CASE NO. 4 1.Contrast the mechanism of action of depo;arising and
Given a 25yo man develops and nondepolarizing neuromuscular junction blockers.
muscle rigidity,tachycardia, 2.List the therapeutic uses and advers effects of skeletal ; ;
and high fever during surgery muscle relaxants.
3.Know about malignant hyperthermia(rare) and treatment
Of choice.Know: MOA of DANTROLENE
BASIC PHARMACOLOGY of the following DRUGS:
-MOA of depolarizing and nondepolarizing neuromuscular
junction blocking agents.
-Therapeutic uses and adverse effects of skeletal muscle
Relaxants
-Structure and function of NMJ
(Physiology/Anatomy/Histo Link)
-Drugs acting on NMJ:
a.depolarizing;prototype:succinylcholine
b.nondepolarizing:prototype:d-Tubocurarine
Cisatracurium,Vecuronium,Rocuronium
KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MALIGNANT
HYPERTHERMIA-a rare inherited autosomal dominant
disorder
A healthy 25 yo man is undergoing a brief surgical procedure requiring general
anesthesia. He underwent an unremarkable intubation and induction of anesthesia using IV
succinylcholine and inhaled halothane.During the surgery the patient develops muscle
rigidity and tachycardia and his temperature rapidly rises.
1.What is the mechanism of action of succinylcholine?
2.What reaction is occurring in the patient.?
3.What drug should immediately be given to the patient, and what is its mechanism of
action?

Delivery Mode Flexible Learning Format

Distance learning and face to face instructions
Teaching Method Blended: Online with face to face instructions.
Asynchronous teaching:
1) Canvas platform, Google classroom
2) Face to Face instruction are held weekly
3) Learning materials are also mailed by post.

Lecture notes and slides for each week’s material will be

posted as soon as possible (Mondays). To log onto GCM
portal you must have registered for the courCAse
and have a GCM email address.

Learning Activity In pharmacology, students typically are handed new

learning materials every Monday, video lectures by
Tuesday, discussion board posts by Thursday, and
quizzes every Friday.

Most lectures are recorded for online viewing except for

actual small group discussion for case presentation ,
case study on Wednesdays 2-4pm.

Virtual meeting with faculty is usually held on Saturdays

1-4pm, scheduled by small groups.
Class is divided into small groups and assigned a
preceptor to facilitate weekly forum.
Each group will choose a topic for case to present
at the end of module 1.

Learning Resources The major content of the course will be presented in

lecture (recorded or virtual) and/or handouts. Each
handout will provide a list of learning objectives as well
as a drug list of the specific pharmacologic agents that
students are expected to know.

The textbook should serve as a source for clarification

and elaboration and for future use as a source for more
detail on specific drugs not covered in the course.

The book is available on library website.
