QUESTION ANSWERS MARKS

Q3 6 Marks
i) Calculate, assuming slow cooling, the volume fraction and composition
of the solid at 600ºC

The solidus line drops

112˚C in 5.5 wt.% Cu
or 20.36 wt.%-1

The composition of the solid:

60/20.36 = 2.94%

The volume fraction (lever rule: composition of the liquid at 600˚C

The composition will be:
Cl = 60/3.39 = 17.7 wt.%

Using the lever rule:

Vα = (17.7 – 4) / (17.7 – 2.9) = 13.7/14.8
= 92.5 %

ii) Repeat the calculation for rapid cooling conditions (Scheil). 7 Marks

The partition coefficient, k:

k = Cα/Cl
= 5.5/33 = 1/6
The solid composition will vary from that found at the start of solidification
kC = 4/6 = 0.67 wt%

To the composition of the solidifying interface at 600˚C, which = 2.94 wt.%

Use Scheil Equation to find Vs:

iii) For slow cooling, at what temperature does solidification complete? 3 Marks

For equilibrium cooling, solidification completes when the alloy composition

intersects the solids line at:
660 – (20.36 x 4) = 578.6˚C

iv) For fast cooling, what is the fraction eutectic? 4 Marks

For Scheil cooling, it is the repeat of (ii) where the liquid composition is
eutectic composition or equivalently:
