12. (a) i) A box contains 8 red, 3 white, 9 blue balls. If 3 balls are drawn at random, determine

ii) An industrial unit has 3 machines – 1,2,3 which produces the same item. It is known
that machines 1 and 2 , each produce 30% of the total output, while machine 3 produces
40% of remaining output. It is also known that 2% of machine 1 output is defective,
while machines 2 and 3 , each produces 3% defective items. All the items are put into
one stockpile and then one item is chosen at random. Find the probability that defective

(b) (i) A factory has two machines A and B .Past records show that machine A produce 30%
of the total output and machine B the remaining 70%. Machine A produces 5 % defective

distributed with an average life of 2040 hours and standard deviation of 60 hours. Estimate

is picked from a randomly selected Box. If the ball is red, what is the probability that it came

11. (a) (i) The life time of certain brand of an electric bulb may be considered as a RV
with mean 1200 h and standard deviation 250 h. Find the probability using central
limit theorem , that the average life time of 60 bulbs exceeds 1250 h.(Nov/Dec 2016)

(ii) A research worker wants to determine the average time it takes a mechanic to
rotate the trees of a car and she wants to be able to assert with 95% confidence that
the mean of her sample is off by atmost 0.50 minute. If she can presume from past
experience that σ = 1.6 min. How large a sample will she have to take? (Nov/Dec

(b) (i) In a batch chemical process used for etching printed circuit boards, two
different catalysts are being compared to determine whether they require different
emersion times for removal of identical quantities of photo resist material. Twelve
batch were run with catalyst 1 , resulting in a sample mean emersion time of 24.6
minutes and sample standard deviation of 0.85 minutes. Fifteen batches were run with
catalyst 2, resulting in a mean emersion time of 22.1 minutes and a standard deviation
of 0.98 minutes. Find a 95% confidence interval on the difference in means, assuing
that σ12 = σ22 (Jan 2016)
(ii) Consider the batch chemical etching process described in question 11 b(i).Find a

12. (a) (i) Given a sample mean of 83, a sample standard deviation of 12.5 and a sample
size of 22 , test the hypothesis that the value of the population mean is 70 against

has a standard deviation of 5.3 years and 60% of the population is female. What should
the sample size be if the age is to be estimated with an error of less than 1 year? What
should be the sample size if the similar estimation is to be done on the proportion of
female population if the desired accuracy is to be within 5%?
If the sample average age is found to be 37.25 for a sample size of 300, estimate

15. (a) (i) The mean height of 50 male students who showed above average participation
in college athletics was 68.2 inches with a standard deviation of 2.5 inches, while 50 male
students who showed no interest in such participation had a mean height of 67.5 inches
with standard deviation of 2.8 inches. Test the hypothesis that male students who

(b). (i) An automobile dealer wants to estimate the proportion of customer who still Own the
cars they purchased 5 years earlier. A random sample of 200 customers Selected from the
automobile dealer’s records indicates that 82 still own cars that were purchased 5 years earlier.
Set up a 95% confidence interval estimate of the population proportion of all customers who still
own the cars 5 years after they were purchased.
(ii) A research worker wants to determine the average time it takes a mechanic to rotate
the trees of a car and she wants to be able to assert with 95% confidence that the mean of her
sample is off by atmost 0.50 minute. If she can presume from past experience that σ = 1.6 min.
