1.0 SCOPE

1.1 This piping and valve material specification covers the piping and valve
material classes for In Salah Gas project of Algeria.

1.2 The following notes are applicable to all Piping Classes within this
specification; in the case of conflict, the Piping Class shall take
precedence.

1.3 This specification defines, by Piping Class, the material requirements for
pipe, valves, flanges, fittings and other piping components; and the
pressure / temperature limitations for these items.

2.0 DESIGN PRINCIPLES

2.1 Design Codes

• Pressure / temperature ratings of flanged components in sizes 1/2”

through 24” are in accordance with ASME B16.5. Pressure /
temperature ratings of flanged components in sizes larger than 24”
are in accordance with ASME B16.47 Series “A”, unless otherwise
specified in the individual Piping Classes. Pressure is indicated in
Barg.

• All piping component wall thicknesses specified in the individual

Piping Classes are calculated in accordance with ASME B31.3,
based on the internal design pressure and temperature of the
service limit specified in the individual piping class. Where systems
are subject to vacuum conditions, calculations to verify wall
thickness will be carried out during detailed design and
engineering.

• Nominal sizes and wall thicknesses of pipe, as specified in the

Piping Classes, are in accordance with ASME B36.10M and ASME
B36.19M. Tolerances on pipe wall thicknesses, used in
calculations, have been derived from the relevant API and ASTM
codes.

• Buttweld fittings such as Weldolets not covered by ASME B16.9

shall be determined during detailed design and engineering.

• In piping classes where valves with soft (resilient) seats are

specified, design limits have been adapted in order to cope with
pressure-temperature ratings as defined in the applicable valve
standard, as listed in Section 3.1

• In each piping class a note indicates on which code the design

limits are based. Piping materials in low temperature service shall
meet the requirements of ASME B31.3

• Where the Materials Selection Philosophy UB00-B-PPTN-000-0001

has deemed necessary, piping classes have been developed to
comply with NACE MR-01-75

2.3 Branch Connections

• Reinforcement requirements for 90 deg. branch connections have

been calculated with reference to the design limits of the piping
class in accordance with ASME B31.3, paras 304.3.2/3.
Consideration shall be additionally given to externally applied
forces and moments.

• In each piping class a diagram is given in order to select the correct

branch connection, suitable for the design limits of the class

• Branch connections with reinforcing pads or ‘OLETS’ shall be used

in lieu of equal and reducing tees on, drains, traps, vents, laterals,
and where dimensions limit the use of equal and reducing tees.

• Reinforcement pads for branch connections shall be verified during

detailed design and engineering, considering internal / external
pressure, external forces and moments, etc.

• Branch connections in vibrating service shall be kept as short as

possible to minimise the vibrational moment arm. Large masses
such as relief valves or double block valves will be suitably
supported.

2.4 General Practices

2.4.1 Pipe, valves, and fittings in sizes 1-1/4”, 2-1/2”, 3-1/2”, 5”, and 22” shall not be
used.

2.4.2 For nominal pipe sizes, valves and fittings, the inch indication shall be used in
the Piping Classes.

2.4.3 All bending shall be in compliance with the ASME B31.3.

2.4.4 The stud bolt length shall be calculated in accordance with ASME B16.5.
Where spectacle blinds, etc., are installed, the stud bolt length shall be
increased by the thickness of such devices and the extra gasket.

2.4.5 The use of asbestos in the manufacture of gaskets or packing material

is strictly prohibited.

2.4.6 A summary of the various instrument connections on piping and equipment is

provided in Section 4.

2.4.7 Vent and Drain arrangements not shown on P & I D’s are generally as
follows:
Vent Nipoflange + Blind Flange
Drain

For CL300 and Lower class : Threadolet + Plug to be seal welded after test.

Components to be included in Piping Classes.

2.4.8 Raised Face Flanges

Where “smooth” is specified for a flange surface finish, the range of

acceptance shall be 3.2µm to 6.3µm with a surface roughness conforming to
ASME B46.1
