RECAP

We have learned that each of the letters has different

sounds. There are vowels with a short sound and a long sound.
Now, let us refresh our minds with the sound of the letters. As I sing
and say the letter, you will give me the sound it produces. Are you
ready?
The b says /b/
The b says /b/
Every letter makes a sound
The b says /b/

(Use consonant letters P, T, S, and F in the song)

LESSON

Alphabet letters produce different sounds. A sound can

either be short or long. The vowels in the alphabet are the letters
A, E, I, O, U.
Let us read these words phonetically and identify the middle
sound.
The middle sound of bag is /a/; the middle sound of pen is /e/; the
middle sound of cat is /a/; the middle sound of pan is /a/; the
middle sound of bib is /i/; the middle sound of hen is /e/; and the
middle sound of pin is /i/.

If you spell the words, you need to consider the sound of

each letter in the word.

Today, let us talk about Short vowel e, a, and i in words in

Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (C-V-C) pattern.

1) The sound of short e vowel is /e/ (eh).

Let’s take a look and read the following words.

wet hen red leg

set pen bed keg
pet ten led beg
jet men wed peg
net den fed
vet

These words are examples of short e middle vowel sound.

The sound of short e is /e/.

2) The sound of short a vowel is /a/ (ah).

Let’s take a look at the pictures and read the following
words.
These are examples of words with short a middle vowel
sound.
The sound of short a is /a/.

3) The sound of the short i vowel is /i/ (ih).

Let’s take a look and read the following words.

bib pig pin dip kit

rib dig tin lip pit
nib gig fin hip lit
fib jig win sip bit

These words are examples of short i middle vowel sound.

The short sound of vowel i is /i/.

Guided Practice
Tell whether each set of words has short vowel e sound or not.

jet let bed pen

You’re right! The first set of words have the same middle
sound of short vowel e.

bed keg pet ten

Correct! The second set of words has the same middle sound
of short vowel e.
men man fed fin

The set of a word does not have the same short middle
sound of the letter “e.” If your answer is the same, then you are
correct! That is because man has a short sound of the letter “a”
and fin has a short sound of the letter “i."

Now, let’s do another set of exercises for the short a sound.

Show a happy face if the picture has the correct name of the
short vowel a, and if not, show a sad face and change the
correct name of the picture.

You’re right! The picture matched to its correct name of short a.

If you show a happy face, you’re correct. The picture matched to

its correct name of short a. What about the next example?

Very Good! The picture does not match its name. So, you need to
change the word hat to cat.
If you show a sad face, you’re absolutely right. The picture
does not match its name. Therefore, you need to change the
word ham to pad. So, always be familiar with the name of the
things around you.

Now, let’s do another set of exercises for short i sound. Listen

as each phrase is read. If you hear a word that has short vowel i,
Clap your hands.

a pin in the kit

If you clapped your hands for the words pin, in, and kit, you’re
right.

fin of the fish

If you clapped your hands for the words fin and fish, you’re right.

tip of the hill

If you clapped your hands for the words tip and hill, you are
correct.
