Examination for preparation for the SEA 2020, Test 5 Page 21 Section 2 Reading Comprehension 10 15 20 25 Factual Passage TASK 4 Read the passage below and answer questions 19 to 28. | How is crude oil in the earth formed? It is formed from plankton that lived millions of years ago. Plankton are very tiny organisms that either live by freely floating on water closer to the ocean’s surface where they grow in the sunlight or have evolved to live on the ocean floor. When they died, they sank into deeper oxygen-starved waters where they became preserved. Over time, the prehistoric plankton remains underwent changes, being heated and compressed and mixed into soil and rocks like sandstone over thousands of years. What formed were — Views of a plankton hydrocarbons: mixtures of hydrogen and carbon. Crude oil, ™agnified 200 times natural gas and asphalt are common examples. Another example of a hydrocarbon is shale oil. Shale oil is actually crude oil that is found in shale rock. Shale rock has much finer particles than other rocks with crude oil. Oil that is formed in shale rock is similar to what is described above but it is not as easy to extract from the shale rock itself. Crude oil will flow through the larger pores of the rock that itis contained in. But there is little or no flow in shale rock and the oil becomes much more difficult to get out. This is similar to drinking through a straw Having a glass of juice with some ice cubes can be compared to having a snow cone ‘made from crushed ice. The juice is much easier to get out from ice with the straw when compared to crushed ice. With advances in technology, the United States in particular has been able to remove oil from shale rock found in places such as Colorado and Utah. One way of reaching shale oil is to break up the rock into smaller pieces so the oil will flow out more easily. This is very expensive to do as the shale rock has to be mined and then processed at factories to get the crude oil. Although both oils are the same, the methods of extraction are different, making one cheaper and the other more expensive. Today, there is concern about these hydrocarbons or “fossil” fuels for our energy supply. They are also not very environmentally friendly when they spill into our oceans or when they bur, emitting toxic fumes into the atmosphere. Also, they will run out one day. Therefore, more sustainable forms of energy such as solar, wind and hydro (water) energy need to be more widely used. —_————— ‘EduscapeCaribbean.
