Examination for preparation for the SEA 2020, Test 8 Page 20 Section 2 Reading Comprehension Factual Passage | Read the passage below and answer questions 19 to 28. TASK 4 10 15 20 25 30 ‘Temple In The Sea Twas not very much of an athlete but when it came to the annual school games, Twould participate in the odd flat race or novelty event. One year, more by luck rather than skill, I placed second in one of those races and as a result had to represent my school at Waterloo in the zonal games. The zonal games were held at McMillan Park, as large a playground as I had ever seen with a massive concrete pavilion, possibly in 1979. The area ‘was located near the coast of the Gulf of Paria and was flat, sprawling and breezy. From the top of the pavilion, my father who came along to support me, had pointed out a comer in the distance where a small Hindu temple once stood. I saw nothing but a grass covered area. He did however mention with a voice that quivered with excitement about the “temple in the sea” and of the man who against all odds managed to construct it. After the sports, we drove a short distance to sce the broken down remnants of it, Construction From accounts, the story goes that Sewdass Sadhu, an indentured immigrant to the sugar estate at Brickfield, had single-handedly built a place of worship in the sea after his original temple, made in the marshes of the sugar company’s McMillan Park, was bulldozed. He was fined and jailed for refusing to demolish it himself. And afterward, he gathered oil drums which he tied together and filled with concrete to lay a foundation from the shore into the sea. His temple would stand on no man’s land and never be torn down, he resolved. For the most part, with the aid of his bicycle alone, he salvaged rubble and stone to extend into the water. He succeeded in building his Temple In The Sea after nearly 25 years of daily toil and ridicule which did not dampen his tenacity and self-belief. Sewdass Sadhu passed on in 1970. The temple that stands today is a reconstruction, completed in 1995. It is a national treasure and a beautiful and calming place but its real grandcur lies in its enduring message; what each of us can achieve despite the hardships that we may have to endure. ‘Afterall, the secret to who you are and what you become are all there to unlock from inside of you. — EduscapeCaribbean.
