Transmission Clutch Pressure - Test

SMCS - 3155-081-PX

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system on this

machine after the engine and pump have been stopped. Serious injury
can result if this pressure is not released before any service is done on
the hydraulic systems. In order to prevent possible injury, release the
hydraulic system pressure before working on any fitting, hose, or
hydraulic component.

Lower all attachments to the ground before service is started. If the

hydraulic system must be serviced, tested, or adjusted with the
attachment in the raised position, the attachments and lift cylinders
must be supported properly.

Always move the machine to a location away from the travel of other
machines. Be sure that other personnel are not near the machine when
the engine is running and tests or adjustments are being made.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Introduction
The following test will determine the pressures that are being delivered to each individual
transmission clutch.

No. 1 clutch through No. 4 clutch will engage at high pressure 2760 ± 140 kPa (400 ± 20 psi) (main
relief valve pressure) at HIGH IDLE (2200 rpm). The No. 5 clutch should typically engage at a
pressure of 2205 ± 140 kPa (320 ± 20 psi) at HIGH IDLE (2200 rpm).

(1) Pressure Tap (No. 4 Clutch)

(2) Pressure Tap (No. 5 Clutch)

(3) Pressure Tap (No. 3 Clutch)

(4) Pressure Tap (No. 2 Clutch)

(5) Pressure Tap (No. 1 Clutch)

3. Attach one set of tooling (A) to pressure tap (2) and one set of tooling (A) to pressure tap (5).
Pressure tap (2) is for No. 2 Clutch (FORWARD). Pressure tap (5) is for No. 5 Clutch (FIRST
SPEED).

4. Run the hydraulic hoses from tooling (A) into the cab.

5. Start the engine. Warm the hydraulic oil to a minimum temperature of 84° ± 8°C (183° ± 14°
F).

6. Operate the engine at HIGH IDLE (2200 rpm). Move the machine with the steering control
lever in the FIRST SPEED FORWARD position.

7. Check the pressure at tooling (A) for the No. 2 clutch. The pressure at tooling (A) for the No. 2
clutch should be 2760 ± 140 kPa (400 ± 20 psi) (main relief pressure).

8. Check the pressure at tooling (A) for the No. 5 clutch. The pressure at tooling (A) for the No. 5
clutch should be 2205 ± 140 kPa (320 ± 20 psi).

Note: The No. 1 clutch through the No. 4 clutch will engage at 2760 ± 140 kPa (400 ± 20 psi)
(main relief valve pressure) at HIGH IDLE (2200 rpm). The No. 5 clutch should typically
engage at a pressure of 2205 ± 140 kPa (320 ± 20 psi) at HIGH IDLE (2200 rpm).

9. Operate the engine at LOW IDLE (700 rpm). Move the machine with the steering control lever
in the FIRST SPEED FORWARD position.

10. Check the pressure at tooling (A). The pressure at tooling (A) for the No. 2 clutch and the No.
5 clutch should be 2585 ± 110 kPa (375 ± 15 psi).

Reference: See Specifications, Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Pressure Charts"

in this module for additional pressure values.

11. Use Table 3 in order to check all of the other combination of clutches. Copy Table 2 and
record the pressure measurements in the table.
