Learning Tasks #2:  Choose your Model! : An Article Review

Among the theories, the one that could fit to the case of Kimberly Alvarado is the
Health Belief Model. It is theoretical model that focuses on individual beliefs about health
conditions, which predict individual health-related behaviors. Kimberly’s perception of having a
baby in her teenage year is different from other teenagers undergoing teenage pregnancy. One
of the key elements that supports it; First, Perceived Severity, with that behavior
Kimberly knows the consequences of it and with that it supports the second key
with is Self-Efficacy where her perception of having a baby is in a very positive way
that she is thinking ahead for her baby’s future. Also, her confidence in ability to
succeed is evidently can be seen on her statement “I will go back to my studies when
she's big enough. My dream is to become a teacher.” Which it can be benefit for her child’s
future and to her dream also that she would able to raise her child healthy together with her
husband.

The advantage of the theory is that it can focus on the target population and problem
within an area. Just like the F1KD program it targeted Brgy Catioan where malnutrition is highly
present in that area. Also the theory states that it conveys the consequences of the health
issues associated with risk behaviors in a clear and unambiguous fashion to understand
perceived severity which going back to the F1KD program. The disadvantage of the theory is it
only limited to target population and not for everyone which is a must that everyone needs an
equal attention especially in healthcare. Malnutrition one of the health problems in our country
that needs attention.

All-in-all having a baby is a gift from God, how Kimberly perceived her life is very
commendable. Getting pregnant in an early age and poverty is not a hindrance to become
successful. It is start from within yourselves just like Kimberly that she openly and happily to
have a child, knowing in the teenage years adolescents tend to go out with their friends,
exploring things, in school learning, but to Kimberly it is a whole different thing. But her aim to
become a teacher is still there and her positive mindset really helps her in dealing her own
current situation.
