An Overview of Organizational Behavior
The environment of all organization is changing at unprecedented rate. The growth of micro
financing and rise of social entrepreneuring by organizations such as Mercy corps represent
only two perspectives on environmental change. Indeed, in some industries, such as consumer
electronics, popular entertainment and information the speed and magnitude of change are truly
breathtaking even industries characterized by what have been staid and predictable
environments such as traditional retailing and heavy manufacturing also face sweeping
environmental changes today.
The most significant source of change impact many organizations today is the increasing
globalization of organizations and management. In many ways international is nothing new.
Centuries ago, the Roman Army forced to develop a management system to deal with
widespread empire. In 2010, the volume of international trade in current dollars was every fifty
times greater than the amounting 1960. What led to this dramatic increase? AS Figure 2.1
shows, four major factors account for much of the momentum.
Movement along the continuum from domestic to international business is due to four forces. Businesses subject
to these forces are becoming more international.
Communication and transportation have advanced dramatically over the past several
decades. Telephone service has improved, communication networks span the globe and can
interact via satellite and once remote areas have become routinely accessible.

Fax machines and electronic mail allow managers to send documents around the world
Text messaging and Skype have made global communication even easier.

At one level, it is possible to make several general observations about similarities and
differences across cultures. Cultural and national boundaries do not necessarily coincide. one
major review of the literature.
Behavior in organizational settings does indeed vary cross cultures. Employers in companies
based in japan the united states, and Germany are likely to have different attitudes and patterns
of behavior
Culture itself is one major cause of this variation. Culture is the set of shared values often taken
for granted, that help people in a group organization or society understand which actions are
considered acceptable and which are deemed unacceptable.
Individualism exist to the extent that people in culture define themselves rather than
Collectivism- characterized by tight social framework in which people tend to base their
identities on the group organization to which they belong.
Power distance which can also be called orientation to authority, is extent to which people
accept as normal an unequal distribution of power.
Masculinity, which might more accurately called assertiveness or materialism, is extent we the
dominant values in a society emphasize aggressiveness and the acquisition of money and other
possessions as opposed to concern for people relationships among people, and overall equality
of life.
Long term values include focusing on the future, working on the projects that have a distant
payoff, persistence and thrift
Short-term values are more oriented toward the past and the present and include respect for
traditions and social obligations.
Workforce diversity refers to important similarities and differences among the employees of
organizations. Employee's conceptions of work, expectations of reward from the organizations,
and practices in relating to others are all influenced by diversity. Managers of diverse work
groups need to understand how social environment affects employees' belief about work and
they must have the communication skills required to develop confidence and self-esteem in
members of diverse work groups.
Dimensions of Diversity
the primary dimensions of diversity are those factors that are either inborn or exert extraordinary
influence age race and ethnicity, gender, physical and mental abilities and sexual orientation.
The Value of Diversity
Diversity training is common method used in business today to better enable their employees to
accept and value differences.
Refers to the methods a used to create product, including both physical goods and intangible
services. technological change has become major drivers for other forms of organizations
change. moreover, it also has widespread effects on the behavior of people inside the
organization. three specific are of technology worth nothing here are:
Manufacturing is a form of business that combines and transform resources into tangible
outcomes that are then sold to others. the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company is manufacturer
because it combines rubber and chemical compounds and uses blending equipment and
molding machines to create tires. A service organization is one that transforms resources not an
intangible output and creates time or place utility for its customers.
Information Technology
Most people are very familiar with advances in information technology cellular telephones,
electronic books, smart phones like the iPhone and blackberry, the IPad and digital cameras as
well as technologically based social networking sites such as Facebook, are just a few of the
many recent innovations that have changed how people live and work.
Ethics and Corporate Governance
Ethics have long been or relevance to business, what seems like an epidemic of ethical
breaches in recent years has placed ethics in the mainstream of managerial though today, one
special aspect of business ethics, corporate governance, has also taken on increased
importance. Ethics also increasingly relate to information technology.
A central issue today revolves around the fact that rapid changes in business relationships,
organizational structures and financial systems pose unsurpassed difficulties in keeping
accurate track of company's financial position. The public as well as current and potential
investors often get blurred pictures of a firm's competitive health. however, stakeholder’s
employees, stockholders, consumers, unions creditors and government are all entitled to a fair
accounting so they can make enlighten personal business decisions.
Online privacy has become a hot issue as companies sort our related ethical and management
issues. DoubleClick, an online advertising network, is one of the firms at the center of the
privacy debate. the company has collected data on the habits of millions of Web surfers.
Knowledge workers are employees added value to organizations because of that they did or
because of their experience. During today's "information age" many employees add value
simply because of what they know.
Contingent worker is a person who works for an organization on something other than a
permanent or full time basis. Categories of Contingent workers include independent contractors
on call workers, temporary employees (usually hired through outside agencies and contract and
leased employees.
Tired Workforce exists when one group of organization's workforce has a contractual
arrangement with the organizations objectively different from that of another group performing
the same jobs.
Contingent worker is a person who works for an organization on something other than a
permanent or fulltime basis.
