Houston charter school announces inaugural Leadership Awards Gala


Celebrating 20 years of service

HOUSTON – January 22, 2018. SER-Niños Charter School system will hold its
inaugural Leadership Awards Gala on April 7, 2018 at the DoubleTree by Hilton,
Greenway Plaza from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. This event is the school system’s first Gala,
and will be honoring entrepreneurial, corporate, government and community leaders who
have made a significant impact in the Houston community. This year the district is
celebrating its 20-year anniversary of education and service to the Gulfton community.

SER-Niños anticipates 250 people including local government, corporate leaders and
prominent citizens of Houston to attend. The evening’s events will include: an elegant sit-
down dinner, auction items and an honoree ceremony. The 2018 honorees are:

Community Leader of the Year: Honorable Debra Ibarra Mayfield


Entrepreneurial Leader of the Year: Nancy Almodovar
Corporate Leader of the Year: John Hernandez
Government Leader of the Year: Mike Laster

The district actively engages teachers, parents and community members in the Gulfton
area of Houston to educate and inspire students to reach their full potential. Gulfton is the
most densely populated neighborhood in Houston with 75 percent Hispanic residents,
immigrating from a diverse array of countries in Central and South America.

The school’s population is 99 percent Hispanic, and 96 percent of students are classified
as economically disadvantaged – almost double the Texas rate. Since opening in 1996 at
Bellaire Christian Church, the school has prioritized the establishment of ethical values
such as honesty, trust and community involvement within its student population. SER-
Niños was among the first generation of Texas Charter Schools. The inaugural
Leadership Awards Gala will provide an opportunity to celebrate the school’s mission
and 20 years of service to the Gulfton community.

About SER-Niños Charter School

SER-Niños Charter School System is a public school serving at-risk youth in Pre-K
though 8th grade. SER-Niños believes that every child can develop the characteristics and
abilities to overcome economic hardship and achieve success. SER-Niños offers high
quality instruction, enrichment activities and family support to help students excel
academically, socially and emotionally. SER-Niños has 2 elementary schools and a
middle school, totaling a student population of over 1,100.
