Mass Transfer Lab Equipment Description:

Gas liquid absorption:

It is a separation process where the non-diffusing contacting phases are a gas and a liquid with
the mobile phase is a gas or a liquid. A good example of this is scrubbing sulfur dioxide, a
component of acid rain, from flue gases using an alkaline solution. Using this unit students
evaluate the absorption of carbon dioxide from air using water with an absorption column packed
with rashing rings. For these labs, students determine optimal operating parameters, column
sizing, and pressure drop characteristics.

 Experiments done on it:

 Experiment A:The objective of this experiment is to measure the absorption of carbon

dioxide into water flowing down the packed column, using the gas analysis equipment
provided.
 Experiment B: The objective of this experiment is to calculate rate of absorption of
carbon dioxide into water from analysis of liquid the solutions flowing down the packed
column.
 Experiment C : The objective of this experiment is to calculate rate of absorption of
carbon dioxide into caustic soda solutions from analysis of liquid solutions flowing down the
packed column.
 Experiment D : The objective of this experiment is to show that the amount of carbon
dioxide removed from the air stream equals the amount taken up by a liquid stream of caustic
soda solution.
 Experiment E : The objective of this experiment is to determination the Overall Mass
Transfer Coefficient (Kog)
 Experiment F : The objective of this experiment is to determine the air pressure
differential across the dry column as a function of the air flow rate.
 Experiment G : The objective of this experiment is to examine the air pressure
differential across the column as a function of air flow rate for different water flow rates
down the column .

Distillation column:
Distillation is used in a variety of separation processes and involves separating one volatile liquid
from another liquid. On this unit students study the operation of an eight sieve-tray distillation
column separating alcohols from water at partial and total reflux conditions. In these labs,
students perform detailed mass and energy balances involving vapor-liquid equilibrium. The unit
is used to study the batch and continuous distillation process by varying feed tray locations, feed
temperature etc.

Liquid / Liquid Extraction unit:

Liquid/liquid extraction is a valuable process in chemical engineering where the separation of
one or more of the components from a liquid mixture is required. Using this unit students
evaluate the separation of one or more components of a liquid mixture by treating the mixture
with an immiscible solvent in which one of the mixture compounds will be preferentially
soluble. This unit demonstrates this process in the laboratory so that students may gain a
thorough understanding of this industrial technique.

Features:
1. Self-containedfloor-standing unit with integral control and instrumentation console.
2. Three stage extraction process, can also be configured as one or two stages
3. Independent vessel for closed loop batch extraction.
4. Temperature control at each stage.
5. Individual control of solvent feed pumps at each stage, of cell rotation rate and of feed
rate.
6. Probes at each stage enable full monitoring of the process.

Experimental capabilities:
1. Demonstration of the operation of a continuous multiple stage process
2. Closed circuit percolation extraction (batch extraction).
3. Open loop percolation extraction (continuous operation).
4. Investigation of one, two and three stage continuous processes.
5. Investigation into effect of solvent temperatures.
6. Investigation into effect of solvent flow rates.
7. Investigation into effect of processing time.
