What’s Updated in PipelineStudio® 4.2.1

New Features

®
New features implemented in PipelineStudio are carefully selected to enhance your simulation experience. A
brief overview of some of the key features is given below:

®
Release 4.2.1 of PipelineStudio has the following improvements:

1. (Gas/Liquid) Allowed different types of fluids to be included in the same configuration

2. (Gas/Liquid) Added CNGA and VDW equation of states
3. (Gas) Improve throttling device temperature change calculation due to Joule-Thomson effects
4. (Gas/Liquid) Minimum knot spacing validation value can now be reduced to 1 ft
5. (Liquid) Change the liquid regulator to default "Check" and "Free Flow" to Yes
6. (Liquid) DRA units updates

1. Allowed different types of fluids to be included in the same configuration

Allowed different types of fluids, i.e. tabular and compositional in Liquid, and simplified and compositional in Gas to
be included in the same configuration. This allows the users to have both fluids configured so that they can switch
between different equations of state.
2. Add CNGA and VDW equation of state

We have included the CNGA equation of state to gas modelling. The CNGA supercompressibility (Z-factor)
equation describes the effect of pressure and temperature on the z-factor for natural gasses. It is then used with the
standard engineering EOS to provide the PVT-relationship for a fluid behaving in a vapour state. The
compressibility factor is used for a fluid described by its base qualities, although the base qualities can be
determined for a fluid described by a mixture of its components.
The Engineering Equation of State is:

M P 0-1
 
W

ZRT

where
 is the density in kg/m3
M is the fluid molecular mass in Kg/Kmol
w

T is the temperature in Kelvin

1
R is the Universal Gas Constant in J/Kg-Kmol K (and has a value of 8314.472 )
P is the Pressure in Paa
Z is the supercompressibility (Z) factor

The z-factor is given by

1 0-2
Z  b
aP G 10
1 c
T
where
a 5.27445
b 1.785
c 3.825
 is the specific gravity
PG is the gauge pressure

1
NIST value
Also, added VDW (Van Der Waals) equation of state to both Gas and Liquid simulation engines. VDW (Van Der
Waals) equation of state is already available in the PipelineStudio help file under “Gas Compressibility Factor for
the Cubic Equations of State”.

Gas:
Liquid:

3. Device temperature change calculation due to Joule-Thomson Effects

The discharge temperature solution now uses averaged variables over a number of steps (or over a number of
devices) giving a more realistic comparison to the thermodynamic solution.
4. Minimum knot spacing validation value reduced to 1 ft

PipelineStudio now allows for a minimum knot spacing of 1‟ in both gas and liquid simulation.
Note: In principle, a smaller minimum knot spacing value equates to a higher accuracy for simulations. However,
excessively small knot spacing may greatly reduce simulation speed and produce no noticeable improvement in
accuracy.
5. Change the liquid regulator to default "Check" and "Free Flow" to Yes

Note 'Check' and 'Free Flow' options are now set to 'Yes' by default for newly created regulators.
6. (Liquid) DRA units updates

DRA units are now updated to show calculated DRA density based on specific gravity.
RESOLVED ISSUES
This update also addresses the following issues:

SPR Summary
32328 Tabular Fluid in PLS 4.2.1 is now allowed while compositional fluid is defined.
33618 Discharge pressure going above the max down pressure set point.
36962 DRA capability that existed in PLS 3.6.1 does not exist in PLS 4.1.1 You can now define DRA
with compositional fluid.
38489 Added CNGA equation of state to Gas. It is similar to Sarem (base eos)
33617 Pump mode switching problem
32325 Propane Pressure profile difference Issue with PLS4.1.1 and PLS3.6.1
36848 Survey path does not work correctly when excluding pipes.
37151 PLS closes with the error message "PipelineStudio has stopped working"
33829 Steady-State did not converge message doesn‟t appear.
38545 Allow Correlation and Auto-Generate for LPG/NGL

and vice versa.
Troubleshooting the Network License Manager on Virtual Machines

If installing the Sentinel Network License Manager is not successful for an NLM installation on a virtual machine,
you may need to configure the VM to see the USB ports on the host machine.

1. Enable direct I/O path on the host. Ensure the host is booting VMWare ESXI from the hard drive (this
will not work if the host is set to boot from USB).

2. Shut down all VMs on the host and restart the host for it to see the DirectPath.

3. Assign the VM to use the direct USB controller you just set up by adding it to the VM devices.

4. If needed, install the driver for the bitlock on the VM.

5. Reboot the VM.

6. Proceed with any steps related to installing the Sentinel Network License Manager that were not
successful previously.

If the attachment is not successful, please contact Emerson for more information.
Troubleshooting the NLM Bitlock installation on Physical Machines

If the bitlock does not light up and is not seen by PipelineStudio, the Sentinel driver may be attempting to use an
incorrect port to communicate with the bitlock. To force the Sentinel driver to use the USB port, please take the
following steps.

1. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SafeNet Sentinel\Sentinel System Driver.

2. Run SetupSysDriver.exe.

3. Go to Configure Driver.

If more than one port type is listed, disable the usage of the non-USB ports. This can be done by selecting Edit and
choosing No under the Use This Port option.
Emerson Integration
® ®
PipelineStudio is integrated with the Emerson suite of products including PipelineManager . It is recommended
that a customer with more than one Emerson product contact the Customer Care team for integration compatibility

Change to installation file structure

With the acquisition of Energy Solution by Emerson we have made some modifications to the default installation
paths and file locations.
You will now find the PipelineStudio folder under the Start | Emerson | PipelineStudio location if you are trying to
start the application from the start menu.

The applications are also now installed by default to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Emerson\PipelineStudio 4.2
Program data files and My Simulations remain unchanged and may vary depending on version of the operating
system you are using.

Surveys for Gas simulation

PipelineStudio 4.2 sees the implementation of surveys and survey paths for gas simulations, permitting the use of
raw survey data in your PipelineStudio gas configurations.
The same features are available for gas surveys as for liquid, and in the case where you have a very granular set of
survey data unnecessary points can be trimmed using the survey grooming tool.
To toggle between nodes and survey you can use the Simulation | Options | General tab and select the elevation
type from the drop-down menu. When switching between nodes and surveys data for the unused method will
remain editable, but it will not be used in the simulation.
To add a survey, right click the series of elements; for example you can highlight a number of connected elements
as though you were going to create a profile; then right click and select “Create Survey Path…”

The survey path dialog will be displayed. This dialog allows you to work with the survey elements.

Path Section
The path lists the connected elements, the order in which they are connected, the start node and the end node. The
path color can be highlighted, and the color selection drop down allows you to do this. You may also choose the
“share ditch” option if the line is a loop and is in the same right of way as an existing line with a survey. You may
choose to rename the survey path, and you may choose to reorient the elements against the survey which has
been entered.

Surveys
The survey is where a new survey may be created, most commonly from a data source such a GIS based right of
way or from a google “KML” files. Multiple surveys may be joined together to form a contiguous path, and the start /
finish point for each survey may be entered. This allows path that cross several rights of way to be included.
Summary
The summary displays the elevation profile for the selected survey, and if elements are selected in the Path
Selection region they will be highlighted against the elevation profile.

Survey details
The details button for the surveys displays the table where you can import your survey data or paste your survey
data. This dialog also allows you to access the “grooming tool”. The grooming tool allows you to trim the number of
data points being used in the survey. Trimming the number of data points reduces the number of calculations
intervals.
Node elevations for Liquid simulation

Node elevations have been made available for liquid simulation. This has been done to allow you to generate liquid
models with simple known elevation points without the need to enter survey data.

The defined elevation method is selected from the Simulation | Options | General tab. If you wish to use nodes
you would change from surveys to nodes in the drop down.

You would then, for each node you were concerned about, enter the elevation for the node; this can be done on the
dialog box or on the table for the nodes.

Note: In the case of a zero lenth device, such as a block valve, the elevation is not inherited from one node; i.e. you
would need to enter the elevation at both nodes on the device.
Iso-efficiency curve for compressors

Display compressor curves in an iso-efficiency format has been requested for some time. We have added the
option in this release, available from Chart | Centrifugal Performance Curves | Head /Efficiency / Operating
Point. The curve can only be accessed when a centrifugal compressor is selected.

Compressor bank updates

The way compressor banks and stations has been changed. A station is a collection of banks, and allows you view
and trend a small set of hydraulic properties for that group; typically the flow rate. There are no configuration
options available at a station.

A bank needs to be assigned to a station, and it allows a number of compressor units that are configured in parallel
to be controlled to achieve the required setpoints. Two new options are available on the bank, load rebalance and
recycle rebalance.
Load Rebalance means that the operating compressors in the bank will always share balanced load. When a high
priority compressor in the bank reaches its maximum constraint, the bank starts another compressor with lower
priority. These two compressors immediately runs with balanced load. For example, if two compressors have same
specification, then they will have same flow rate.
Recycle Rebalance means the operating compressors will try to avoid possible recycling through load rebalancing.
For example when a bank starts a compressor with lower priority, if this compressor has to recycle due to the
violation of minimum flow condition, the running compressor with higher priority will automatically reduce the flow
rate in order to eliminate the recycling.

Thermal Model

The thermal solver has been modified to allow us to make some modelling improvements in a future software
release, and to also improve accuracy and stability. This may lead to some small changes in results for models
which are configured to use temperature tracking options.
The pipe thermal model has been modified to improve accuracy and stability:

1. The thermal equation has been reformulated to include the effect on the fluid temperature of transient
changes in the pipe diameter dues to pipe wall expansion. This results in the following form of the thermal
equation:

1  P  P 1
2
fv v 4U T  Tg 
 C v T t  vT x    T  P  At  T  Av  x  
w

A   T 

 T 
A 2D0 D0

1  P 
Under normal circumstances the area temporal derivative term (  T  P  A t )has negligible
A   T 

impact on the thermal solution. However, some internal testing indicated that under unusual, but not
unrealistic conditions, this term can affect the thermal solution by 1 – 2 Fahrenheit degrees.

2. To further improve accuracy whilst retaining the stability of the thermal solution, restrictions on magnitude of
the isochoric fluid derivative have been relaxed. This improvement has also been incorporated in valve and
regulator models.

3. Some measures have been implemented to improve the stability of the thermal solution under very low, and
zero, low conditions.
Profile enhancements

Profile charts have been enhanced, including the ability to load and save templates, and save and load styles.
A style is the overall look and feel of a profile, for example the color scheme used or how the axis are displayed.

A template is a set of data profiles, for example one might profile pressure and density on different axis side etc.
A template will use the style that it has been saved with.

Enable and disable scripts

User defined logic has allowed new level of control over PipelineStudio simulation. However, there may be times
that you would like to run a simulation without the script executing. We have added the option to disable scripting in
the User Defined Logic settings.

Network License Manager Update

We have made some modifications to how the network license manager acquires licenses.
Some users were experiencing issues where, when the combo license was checked out it was not possible to
check other types of license out.
The network license manager behaviour has been changed to allow combo licenses to be mixed on the same
network license manager with single gas or liquid seats. If the network license manager has a combination of single
user gas or liquid and combo licenses, PipelineStudio will always attempt to acquire the combo license before any
single model type license. However, once this license has been checked out the remaining licenses will now be
available to be checked out.
We do recommend that combo and single seat gas or liquid licenses remain on different NLM servers to avoid the
issue of the combo license being checked out first by default.

KNOWN ISSUES
Note on Intel processors
Upgrades in hardware technology by Intel combined with upgrades to the JIT compiler used in .NET has caused
some slight numerical differences. In general, it is not a problem but we have observed some different behaviour
with some fringe cases. It is not incorrect behaviour, just different behaviour, e.g. mode swaps during a highly
transient period may choose a different mode selection.

New Features

1. Status ramp for pumps and compressors

When ramping the status of a pump or compressor the way the ramp is used has now changed.
Instead of ramping status from off to on or on to off over a single time step at the halfway time point of the ramp, the
value from off to on is now considered as a linear rate of change from 0 to 1 (or 0% to 100%). The status trend,
however, displays either a zero or a one – as a value “1” corresponds to the device being “on” and a “0” to the
device being “off”. This can be illustrated in the curve below.

Figure 1: Curves of change in speed of a centrifugal pump and the status is ramped from On to Off.

During this simulation the status is being ramped from “on” to “off” over a 1 hour time period. Whilst the trend
displays the status as a “step” function during the ramp down, the actual value between 1 and 0 during the ramp is
used to multiply the dominant constraint of the device. Constraint logic is still effective during the simulation, and
this will allow mode swapping to continue to take place as the internal status value ramps.
The effect of this is to change how the device performance is being affected. For speed based devices the effect is
to ramp the speed between minimum and maximum over the ramp; imitating a spin up or spin down for the device if
the appropriate curve is not present.
2. Spin up and spin down curves for compressors and pumps

Spin up and spin down curves are now available for both centrifugal compressors and pumps to allow more
accurate modelling of impeller momentum during a transient simulation as the status ramps between on and off.
The curves have been made available to allow better modelling of the spin up and spin down of devices in a
simulation.

Figure 2: Example of a spin up curve

To create a curve, select the Spin-up or Spin-down ID option from the main centrifugal device dialog, and either
generate a new curve or use a pre-exisitng curve.

The spin up and spin down curves are defined for centrifugal and reciprocating devices. A spin up curve is defined
in the time sequence 0% to 100% time, with 0% to 100% of speed; the spin down curve as 0% to 100% time
against 100% to 0% speed.

The curve operates in conjuction with the ramp in status from off to on (or vice versa).
The below example shows the ramp in speed for the same geometrical configuration but one uses spin up / spin
down curves (red line), the other without curve (black line). In this case the spin up / spin down curves are based on
sigmoid curves for illustrative puposes.

3. Maximum Allowable operating Pressure for Gas

MAOP calculations that were available previously for Liquid simulations are now available for Gas simulations.

Figure 4: MAOP for Gas dialog

The available options are:

 Method:
o Explicit – the value in the dialog will be used as the MAOP of the pipe
o Steel – uses a calculation based on the value in the Steel Yield Stress entry
o Plastic - uses a calculation based on the value in the Plastic Yield Stress entry
 Safety Factor – uses the entered value as the safety factor in the calculation
 Maximum Allowable Transient Pressure
 Generates a secondary profile to allow for a MATP and permits entry of the allowable percentage

4. Effect of fluid viscosity on pumps

“ANSI/HI 9.6.7-2015 – Rotodynamic Pumps – Guideline for Effects of Viscosity on Performance.” Has been
implemented.
This permits pumps curves to be defined either with respect to water or with respect to another viscous fluid as the
reference, and for the software to correct the head and efficiency curves for the fluid currently being lifted.

Figure 5: Dialog to configure the effect of viscosity on pumps

5. Trend Templates

The Trend Templates is a way to store and to recall frequently used trends.

Elements that are stored are the property (i.e. pressure, temperature, etc.) and any cosmetic properties that are
associated (plot color, font, background, etc.) The templates are for a single element type (i.e. XREG, PIPE,
PUMP, etc.) and virtually anything that can be done to a trend can be stored.

Once a trend style has been created the context menu may be used to save the chart style as a template:

Figure 6: Context menu to save the template

A dialog to name the saved template is displayed, and once completed the template will be available for all devices
of that type.

The template can then be recalled from the context menu of the device type

Figure 7: Context menu to apply the template

6. Steady Fill option – Liquids

When Batch Tracking is selected for liquid simulations there are now two options available for the user to select
how the pipeline fill is determined.

Figure 8: Steady Fill Option

The Batch option is the traditional method. Uisng this option the pipeline will be filled either with the default fluid
type or with the fill defined in the batch fill.

The Steady option fills the pipeline based on the flow rates at each supply. This blends the fluids at each mixing
node. The continuing fluid blend has viscosity and density calculated from the blend, but the properties for bulk
modulus, thermal expansion and heat capacity the properties of the dominant fluid are used.
7. Reynolds number transitional zone limits configurable

The limit of the start and end of the transitional zone for both gas and liquid simulations has now been made a
configurable input on the simulation | options | fluids tab.

Figure 9: Configurable transitional zone for Gas simulations

Figure 10: Configurable transitional zone for Liquid simulations

8. DRA - minimum effective Reynolds Number, Velocity and Viscosity now configurable

For liquid power DRA the reynolds number, velocity and viscosity at which the additive will be active is now
configurable. This is configured on the simulation | options | batch tab.

Figure 11: Minimum effective limits for DRA for Liquid Power product

9. Pipeline Subnetworks and Subnetworks trends

Pipeline subnetworks have received a major boost allowing for collection of a number of elements into a trendable
group.

Figure 12: Creating a subnetwork from the context menu

A subnetwork may be created by selecting a group of elements and then using the context menu to create a new
sub network, add to an existing subnetwork or remove from a subnetwork.
The Details tab allows for the entry of a name and title for the subnetwork, and provides some information highlights
about the subnetwork.

Figure 13: Dialog for the subnetwork

Included Devices is the list of elements in the subnetwork

Included Nodes permits trending of data between two nodes, for example change in pressure or change in
temperature.

Inventory Alarm Limits enables and generates alarms in reports and in the alarms / events page when inventory
alarms for the subnetwork are violated.

Trends lists the available trends for the subnetwork.

To edit the subnetwork a context click on an element gives access to the properties, from which the subnetwork
may be selected. This may also be accessed from the workspace view.

Figure 14: Accessing the subnetwork

Release Notes for Release 4.0.1
®
Dear PipelineStudio User

®
We are pleased to present PipelineStudio 4.0.1. This document contains information on the most important
changes together with any late-breaking information.

®
Release 4.0.1 of PipelineStudio is classified as a minor release and has the following improvements:

 Added the ability to track components if a compositional fluid is used with a simplified EOS.
o If using a compositional fluid with the SAREM equation of state for natural gas simulation, the
components will be tracked throughout the pipeline network.
 Fixes to allow ramping of components (this fixes a bug in 4.0).
o It was identified that when ramping components in a transient simulation that the transient ramps
were not being handled, and any scenarios containing component ramps where not being saved
correctly. This issue has now been addressed for transient and successive steady state
simulations.
 Added a new transient run type, PSM SS, to allow the parametric study manager to run successive steady-
states without fluid/DRA movement.
o A new simulation type for the parametric study has been added. When running simulations with
changes in the fluid properties in the scenario, for example changing the DRA injection rate, the
fluid would advance. In a parametric study it is not likely you would to advance the fluid in the
pipeline. With this new simulation type the fluid will not advance during the parametric study.
 Compressor statuses changed in 4.0 that may affect your older simulations.
o To align status ramps between pumps and compressors the data consumed by the TNET engine
has changed. This generated a small problem in the way compressor scenarios were being
handled in configurations opened from previous version in 4.0, where compressor status ramps
were being treated incorrectly. This has been fixed in 4.0.1 and any configurations generated in
versions earlier than 4.0 will open correctly; it will also work correctly for most configurations
created in 4.0, with one exception. When a “flat ramp” is being used, i.e. maintaining a constant
compressor status for the entire transient scenario, the status will be toggled incorrectly. In this
case you will need to manually adjust the scenario.

PipelineStudio® RELEASE 4.0

What’s New in PipelineStudio® 4.0?

New Features

®
New features implemented in PipelineStudio are carefully selected to enhance your simulation experience. The
®
new features included in PipelineStudio 4.0 are described in detail in the on-line help and supporting
documentation. A brief overview of some of the key features is given below:

®
1. TNet engine for Liquid
2. Parametric Study Manager
3. User Defined Logic
4. Survey Grooming Tool
5. New quality tracking method for Gas simulations
6. Units Management, Decimal Point Display
7. Review unused (Liquid)
8. Sensor nodes available for Gas simulations

1. (Liquid) TNet® engine for Liquid

® ®
TNet for liquid has been integrated into PipelineStudio .
® ® ®
With the release of PipelineStudio 4.0 the modernized C# engine, TNet , has replaced both TGNET and TLNET
®
and is fully integrated in release 4.0. TNet provides a robust and more flexible simulation performance. The native
file format continues to be the TLW file and XML file formats only.
If you have an older file you wish to import, please contact Customer Care.

2. Parametric Study Manager

®
A steady state parametric study manager has been included in PipelineStudio 4.0. The tool may be invoked from
the Programs menu under All Programs | Emerson | PipelineStudio | Parametric Study Manager

The parametric study tool enables multiple simulations to be executed varying 1 or more parameters for each
simulation within a grid defined by the user or based on a series of specific values. Any parameter that can be
ramped may be included in the simulation, and the size of the grid may be controlled by a lock-step approach (i.e.
parameters will ramp from one value to another in sequence) or the grid may be allowed to grow to a larger size by
choosing not to use the lock-step approach.
To quickly start using this feature select All Programs > Emerson > Pipeline Studio > Parametric Study Manager

The main dialog is displayed:

From the File menu choose New, and the selection dialog is displayed

Choose the browse for configuration button to browse the case that will be studied (must be an XML file), and if a
different output location is desired that may also be selected in this dialog.
Select the type of study, either generic or pipe sizing study. With a pipe sizing study an additional data table with
pipe groups and pipe size entries will be displayed.

The generic study displays a table which can be completed by adding rows and selecting data items from the drop
down.

Once the study has been defined and OK has been selected a dialog is displayed that indicates how many
simulations will be run.

The pipe study displays a dialog where there is a prompt to pre-create the pipe groups and the table of pipe sizes
that may be studied.
When the simulation is run from the Simulate menu option output is displayed to the parametric study manager
window.

On completion of the simultion the data is viewed in the trend viewer, from which you can export your data to a data
table to construct charts and curves in, for example, EXCEL.

3. User Defined Logic (UDL)

®
PipelineStudio 4.0 sees the introduction of an eagerly requested feature, User Defined Logic (UDL).
®
In the previous version of PipelineStudio control was via idealized controls, using maximum and minimum set
®
points and constraints on pipeline entry and exit points, and equipment elements. With PipelineStudio 4.0 you can
now add a layer of logic permitting far more granular control of the simulation.
UDL scripts are created and placed in the root folder of the simulation. The scripts allow logical monitoring of the
status of any value during the simulation and permit any type of control operation to be simulated, such as
controlling the available power at a pump station, toggling the status of a valve or changing the property of a fluid.
Demonstration scripts and configurations are available in the My Documents | My Simulations | Liquids and My
Documents | My Simulations | Gas directories.

User Defined Logic is well documented in a user guide and API guide which can be accessed from the
®
PipelineStudio Help > UDL menu.
4. Survey Grooming Tool

Considerable performance degradation occurs in performance if large numbers of elevation points are provided in
the survey definition. Given the increased tendency to import elevation points from GIS and other field survey
sources, it should be expected that surveys with distance steps of a few feet should be accepted. For the user
manually “grooming” these points is an odious task and new surveys may need to be imposed multiple time a year.
®
Accordingly, a highly desirable feature of PipelineStudio must be the ability to selectively choose which survey
points are hydraulically significant and then use that (significantly) reduced set of points in the simulation. This
programmatic grooming of points should be automatic but controlled by user specification.

Survey grooming is invoked from the Survey Path Details by selecting the Launch Grooming Tool button.
Survey data is imported into the point groomer, and the options to adjust the range, points that must be used etc.
may be selected

Once satisified with how the point is configured the “play” button will groom the points.

Once the survey has been groomed the points being used are displayed, and the numbers displayed in the bottom
left are the number the you started with and the number you ended up with.
The Graphic tab displays a chart of grooomed versus raw data.

How does it work?

Consider a group of survey points as shown below.

First we mark the beginning and ending points and find the highest and lowest points in between. Note that if either
end represents the highest or lowest point a middle point will not be chosen.

Next we consider a distance band around the straight lines drawn between these identified points. We select the
greatest outfall from that band for each line segment.

Largest
Outfall

We connect a new line to those outfall points and repeat the process until all points in the collection fall inside the
banded region.
The selection process is dependent only on the width of the band, which is specified by the user. By choosing a
smaller band, greater accuracy in the approximated elevation profile is obtained.

Largest
Outfall

Largest
Outfall

As illustrated below.

Note that the highest-lowest test is only done at the first pass!
If a band width of zero is selected the entire original collection is used – i.e. no point grooming is done.
The engineering unit associated with the band is taken to be the same as the elevation, depending on the selected
unit set (English, Metric, etc.) While performing the grooming calculations, the horizontal units, which are typically
in miles or kilometers, are converted into units compatible with elevation.
5. New quality tracking method for Gas simulations

®
PipelineStudio 4.0 see the introduction of a method of quality tracking for gas that was previously available in the
version of the solution used for real time simulation but not available offline, this method is called Batch. Previously
®
the only method available in TNet Gas was called random choice, hence there was no selector available. To switch
between batch and random choice the tracking method may be changed from the drop down on the tracking line of
the Simulation > Options > General tab.

Batch based quality tracking is considered to be more accurate than the random choice method, but there is a
slightly slower performance.

6. Units Management, Decimal Point Display

Units management now allows control of the number of decimal places that can be dispayed in a data block or in a
table in the network view. This is controlled in the units manager by changing the numbers of decimals displayed in
the “Data Block Decimal Places” column. Reports and tables will continue to display the full precision of a value.

7. Sensor nodes available for Gas simulations

Sensor nodes have been available in liquid configurations for some time. They are now available for gas devices
that can control pressure, such as regulators or compressors.

When a sensor node is selected the device will attempt to control the pressure at the remote location rather than
the node immediately up or downstream of the device.
8. Review unused

Review Unused may be accessed from Tools > Review Unused

A dialog is displayed that allows the user to select and remove inactive definitions from a configuration, such as
curves, fluids etc.
Multiple definitions may be selected by Shift-Click to select, and “Remove Selected Item(s)” to remove them from
the configuration.
UPDATED FEATURES
1. Resistance Element (Riser) Length Unit Change
2. Updates to wall temperature display
3. Update to ramps on certain elements
4. Updates to DRA
5. Updates to SRV
6. Security changes
7. Minor Changes to GUI
8. Simulation changes:
1. Correlations for LPG and NGL
2. Pump and Compressor Status
9. PLM Integration – Instruments can now be toggled in the Network View

1. Resistance Element (Riser) Length Unit Change

The Unit Category for Length on a Riser (Resistance Element) has been changed from Length units to Elevation
units (Issue #19707).
It is important to note that when using existing configurations which have Resistance Elements used as a Riser
included, the user should force the updating of the configuration .xml file in order to obtain the correct results when
running the simulation. This can be done by either deleting the configuration .xml file or selecting File | Export |
XML File... and choosing to overwrite the existing version of the file.

2. Wall Temperature Display

When displaying wall temperatures across multiple pipes of different wall layer configuration the temperature profile
of wall was not displaying correctly due to the different wall properties. To alleviate this the wall temperature that is
displayed when you have pipes with this type of configuration will now always display the inner and outer wall
temperature.

3. Ramps on certain elements

Ramps have been added that were not previously available. These have mainly been added for the parametric
study manager, however they are also available for transient studies. Some of these ramps include:

- Pipe Inner Diameter

- Pipe Ambient Temperature
- Pipe Roughness
- Pipe Heat Transfer Co-efficient

Whilst these are available for transient simulation their use in transient simulation may not be valid.
This list will be expanded as the parametric study manager continues to develop.

4. Updates to DRA

Transient DRA modelling has undergone some minor improvements:

• Corrections made:
– Pipe degradation
– Pump degradation set to zero on “free flow” or Δp < 1 bar
– DRA line fill (including default level) does not fill supply XREGS and downstream path until DRA
injector located
• Tracking of multiple DRA types added
• DRA type is unique to an injector
• DRA mixing
– ppms are summed
– DRA characteristics from the dominant type (by tracked ppm)

5. Updates to SRV

Surge relief valves have undergone some minor updates to permit modelling closer to that of the real world.
 Coefficient of discharge set to a more realistic default
 Open/close response time for Pop type valves now available for use in both liquid and gas
 Equivalent diameter parameter now exposed

6. Security changes

®
PipelineStudio 4.0 sees the introduction of updated security to protect your investment. This requires an update to
®
the license you use to run PipelineStudio .
If you are using a NLM there will be little change over how we have previously issued new licenses (please refer to
the Network Licensing Help and co-ordinate your new licenses with Customer Care).
If you are using a bitlock please contact Customer Care for instructions on how to upgrade your license.

7. Minor Changes to GUI

 Power contracts now have their own tables

 Multiple case tool now starts in the correct folder and remembers its location
8. Simulation Changes

8.1 Correlations for LPG and NGL

API correlation are no longer valid for use with the fluid classes LPG and NGL. After a thorough review of the
documentation is has been decided that these lighter fluids are best modelled using BWRS EOS.

8.2 Pump Status Ramping

Pump status now ramps differently for a centrifugal pump. This makes a pump behave more like it does when
it shuts down.
®
In PipelineStudio 3.6.1 and earlier, when a status change was invoked the pump would toggle between on
and off halfway along the ramp.
Now the pump behaves differently. The status is ramped as a value between 1 and 0, and the value is
multiplied against the coefficients of the curve fit. This has the effect of more gradually slowing a centrifugal
pump over time rather than invoking an instant status change between time steps.

9. PLM Integration – Instruments can now be toggled in the Network View

® ®
If you are a user of PipelineManager , which may be configured using PipelineStudio , you may now toggle the
®
display of instruments on the network in a configuration that has been developed for PipelineManager .

KNOWN ISSUES
Riser Unit Category
As stated in the Updated Features section, the Unit Category for Length on a Riser (Resistance Element) has been
changed from Length units to Elevation units. When using existing configurations which have Resistance Elements
used as a Riser included, it is necessary for the user to force the updating of the configuration .xml file in order to
obtain the correct results when running the simulation. This can be done by either deleting the configuration .xml
file or selecting File | Export | XML File... and choosing to overwrite the existing version of the file.

Tabular Fluids
When using the dialog to input a tabular fluid, the code enforces the following restriction. The LPG, NGL, and
OTHER class types are not allowed when using the Auto-Generated or API Correlation method (LPG, NGL, and
OTHER are not available in the Class dropdown list). However, when inputting a tabular fluid through the fluid input
table the restriction is not enforced until the configuration is validated.

Remote Commuter Licensing – WRCommute

The WRCommute.exe tool provided to allow a remote user to generate a commuter locking code for Remote
Commuter Licensing (see the Network Licensing Help for details) is known to have an issue with the automatic
®
email capability available from within the tool if the default installed mail client is any 64-bit version of Microsoft
®
Outlook . If you receive the messages shown below after clicking the „Send‟ button to send the email, you can
simply workaround this issue by first saving the locking code to file (there is a button to do this also on the tool) and
® ®
then by attaching the saved file to a new email created from Microsoft Outlook :
