It should be noted that quoted design life should always reflect to the actual operational
and environmental conditions which have an impact compared to the stable laboratory
conditions.
2. Safety
In normal conditions of use lead acid batteries will generate some gas and thus a
venting system should be used in such a conditions where the system from air flow
point of view is completely closed. In the systems where ambient air is exchanged
directly with internal air the venting is not necessarily needed depending on the system
performance.
Specific system and battery brand/type related safety instructions should be taken into
account as per manufacturer specific instructions.
3. Service Life
Normal end of life service lifetime definition used is the point where the battery cell’s
capacity has reached 80% of the rated nominal capacity.
There are multiple factors affecting to battery service life which are strongly related to a
working conditions of the battery.
Operation of lead acid batteries at higher temperatures than +20C or +25C (ref to
chapter 1) will reduce the service lifetime expectancy.
Following table will give some indication of temperature impact to the expected service
lifetime.

Temperature
- cycles
- retention
o every battery brand/type have a specific instructions for retention and procedures for
applying a re-fresh charge depending on the surrounding temperature
o low voltage disconnection (LVD) – this parameter is used to protect batteries from
deep discharges and should always be set as per battery brand/type specific
instructions
o float charge voltage – this parameter should always be set as per battery brand/type
specific instructions
4. Summary
Battery lifetime depends on several factors like working temperature (halved every +10°C above
20°C temperature), lack of proper preventive maintenance (causing higher working temperature),
and on the depth and frequency of the charge / discharge cycles. Actual lifetime is specified under
the normal/stable laboratory conditions and regular preventive maintenance routines as an
approximate expected value and cannot be guarantied as it depends on many local and
unpredictable factors not controlled by the supplier. Lifetime is specified by the battery
manufacturer and thus is not under the system supplier's responsibility.
